Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Fiona Erskine

Yesterday I reviewed Phosphate Rocks by Fiona Erskine.  It is mid June 2021 and Phosphate Rocks is easily the best book I have read so far this year. If you haven’t heard me raving about how much I enjoyed it then I would urge you to read this post then read my review (I shall pop a link at the bottom of the page).

Today Fiona is back and taking on my Decades challenge.  Each week I invite a guest to join me and I ask them to help me assemble a Library of the very best books.  Each guest has just two rules to follow:

1- Choose ANY five books
2 – You may only choose one book per decade over five consecutive decades.

My aim is, with the assistance of my guests, to get the very best selection of books into a Library which began with zero titles on the shelves.  The literary quest began six months ago and on a weekly basis I get feedback from guests (past, present and future) who curse me for imposing those two rules on their selections and the flexing of the rules has been varied and impressive.  You are in for a treat today as the most impressive flexing of the rules is about to be revealed…it’s a good job I loved Phosphate Rocks or there may have been a need for a VAR ruling – you will see what I mean 😉

DECADES

I’m Fiona Erskine and I started writing after a skiing accident gave me some unexpected time off from my day job as a professional engineer.

My first novel, The Chemical Detective, introduces explosives expert Dr Jaq Silver, blowing things up to keep people safe as she tracks a criminal gang from the ski-slopes of the Slovenian Alps to the ruins of Chernobyl. My second novel. The Chemical Reaction, opens with Jaq in trouble on a yacht in the Black Sea. When she blows it up to rescue her crewmate, she has to find a way to pay the owner back. Taking a risky job in China, she finds herself fighting for her life the shadow of the infamous Banqiao Dam. My thrillers have been shortlisted for The Specsavers Debut Crime Novel Award and The Staunch Prize and I’ve signed a deal with Point Blank to produce at least 2 more in the Jaq Silver series.

My latest book Phosphate Rocks: A Death in Ten Objects is a fictionalised account of my very first graduate job. A body is discovered in the ruins of a defunct fertiliser factory, encased in phosphate rock. The police work with retired shift foreman, John Gibson, to try and identify the deceased from the ten objects found with the mummified corpse.

I’m thrilled to have been invited to contribute to Decades. It’s a totally engaging idea, and one I have had some fun with. As well as some pain.

1950

I’ve always loved reading, especially on trains, and my first choice has to be Graham Greene. His books were the perfect length for a journey between Edinburgh (where I was born and went to school) and Cambridge (where I went to university) with a chapter left over for bedtime. Greene was the first author I trusted enough to buy a book based on the writer rather than on the subject matter. I loved the distinctive covers, white with big black letters plus an orange penguin. The books were deceptively slim, but always packed a punch. Aged 17 (and described by a great-aunt as an illiterate alcoholic), I wouldn’t normally have chosen stories about vacuum cleaner salesmen, defrocked priests or lepers but over the next four years I devoured every novel Graham Greene had written. And grew up.

For this (fiendish…shakes first and curses) challenge, Graham Greene also brings the huge advantage that I could have chosen almost any one of his novels written between 1929 and 1990.

Our Man in Havana (1958) by Graham Greene.

Our Man in Havana is the story of a salesman in Cuba who tries to make a bit of money on the side as a spy. There’s a gulf of understanding between those in headquarters and those in the field which James Wormold exploits to his advantage, fabricating information, sketching his own vacuum cleaner nozzles at giant scale as proof of a military installation in the mountains. Credulous M16 take it all at face value and send reinforcements. But lies have a habit of coming back to bite their creator. I must just add that the hapless spy genre is alive and kicking as demonstrated by my favourite book of 2021 so far – Starlings of Bucharest by Sarah Armstrong.

 

1960

The Jewel in the Crown (1966) by Paul Scott

 

I recently listened to an audio version of the Raq Quartet series, and it reminded me how much I adored these books first time round. One of my Edinburgh primary school teachers, Mrs Harris, had lived in India in Raj times and told us extraordinary stories, which flooded back as I read these books.  I have chosen the first in the series, The Jewel in the Crown. Set in the 1940’s it tells the story of Hari Kumar, returning to northern India after an education at an English public school. He is rejected by both the English rulers and his fellow Indians. When Daphne, an awkward English girl, tries to help Hari, things do not end well. It’s wonderfully perceptive exploration of racism, of control of the many by the few, a theme that recurs in Abir Mukerjee’s recent (and wonderfully nuanced) Wyndham & Banerjee novels which I wholeheartedly recommend.

 

 

1970

The Periodic Table (1975) by Primo Levi

If I had to choose a single book that changed my life, then it would be The Periodic Table by Primo Levi. While I was still a student, I spent a summer in Sri Lanka with a group of volunteers. The stated mission was to build a road to connect two villages in the mountains near Kandy. It soon became clear that our real job was to provide entertainment for a group of young people who had been persuaded onto a work experience program to keep villagers away from the big bad cities. The socio-technical project was impossible: the terrain impenetrable, the tools (pickaxes and udeles – a sort of crude right angled shovel) blunt and heavy and the cities exciting. We did a lot of singing and dancing instead, teaching each other our languages with stories and jokes – although everyone found the big white people hilarious even without a punchline. We also shared books which led to my discovery of  Primo Levi.

The Periodic Table is a series of interconnected stories, each based on a chemical element. Primo Levi was an Italian industrial chemist who was sent to a German concentration camp during the second world war. His memoir If This Is a Man is a ferociously powerful book about what it means to be human. Levi narrowly survived Auschwitz by working in IG Farben’s synthetic rubber chemistry lab and the stories in The Periodic Table cover his work as an industrial chemist, before during and after the war. In the story Vanadium, Levi identifies one of his German supervisors from Auchwitz after the war by the mistakes he makes in correspondence about some faulty chemicals.  Levi writes beautifully about the practical realities of science in a way that is accessible to all. This book is the inspiration for all my writing.

 

1980

Virago modern classics were a complete revelation for me during my university days. I devoured the green spined books as fast as they arrived.

Moonraker (1981) by F. Tennyson Jesse

I particularly loved Moonraker, a swashbuckling pirate adventure story with a great twist (no spoilers here) and the sideswipe that illuminates the tragic fate of ex-slave and Haitian freedom fighter Toussaint L’Ouverture.

Fryniwyd Tennyson Jesse was a fascinating character, a war-correspondent, criminologist, and playwright. Born in 1888, she suffered from rickets as a child and became briefly addicted to morphine after an accident led to the amputation of part of her hand.

I could have chosen The Lacquer Lady or A Pin to see the Peepshow by the same author, or any number of other wonderful Virago published books by other writers, but Moonraker is my stand-out thrilling favourite.

(I confess to cheating slightly here, as Moonraker was first launched in 1927, but it only came to wide attention when Virago republished it in 1981. If you disqualify this one, I’ll be forced to shuffle the others around and name Ian Fleming’s inferior Moonraker (1955) first, as a way to sneak this neglected story into the spotlight.)

 

1990

Last but not least, the ultimate thriller.

Kolmysky Heights (1994) by Lionel Davidson

I love the long slow build-up of Kolmysky Heights. Linguist Johnny Porter initially rejects the coded challenge and then takes most of the book to reach the Siberian wastes in order to penetrate the mysterious research centre. No sooner in, than he has to get out. Nobody has ever escaped before, but Johnny is an engineer – right up my street!

I could have chosen one of Davidson’s other novels, The Rose of Tibet and Smiths Gazelle are particularly good, but Kolmysky Heights is the stand-out tecno-thriller with the perfect hero.

 

 

 

 

Looking back at my five choices, I realise two things.

The first is that I have always been a traveller. When I can’t get on a train myself, I travel though books.

The second thing is that I have inadvertently chosen 4 out of 5 books by white men whereas my current reading is much more diverse. I did a check step to see what female authors I had missed. I could have included beloved authors of exquisite prose (Alice Munro, Arundhati Roy), children’s adventure writers (Jan Mark, Joan Aiken), regency romance (Georgette Heyer), science fiction supremo (Ursula Le Guin) or any number of accomplished writers of crime and police procedurals.

But the books that influenced me, that spurred my own writing on, were the science mysteries and adventure thrillers that I read as a young adult. And at that time, most of the books published were written by white men.

Publishing has changed and is much the better for it.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Jonathan Whitelaw

In January I began a quest to curate the Ultimate Library.  I had no idea which books should be included and I knew the only way to get the very best books represented in my Library was to ask booklovers which books they would include.  We started with nothing. Nada. Zero Books.  Each week I ask my guests to nominate ANY five books which they would like to see added to the Library shelves.

Six months on I think we have one non-fiction title (no Haynes manuals), two books which are children’s stories, we have a vampire, a Belgian Detective embarking on his first investigation at Styles, a book about a shark, a Fight Club and many, many more.

When choosing their five books my guests are slightly restricted in their selections.  I don’t ask for their five favourite books as that way leads to chaos.  I insist that my guests can only select one book per decade and they must choose from five consecutive decades.  My new favourite reaction to my insisting on the consecutive decades was a simple message which read “you monster”.  The identity of that guest remains a mystery for the moment but perhaps when I share his selections a few weeks from now I shall remind him of that interchange.

Today, however, my guest was politeness personified and I am therefore delighted to hand you over to Jonathan Whitelaw.

DECADES

Hello everyone, I’m Jonathan Whitelaw and I’m an author, award-winning journalist and broadcaster. When I’m not blowing my own trumpet with all of those inflated titles, I write the HellCorp series about The Devil solving crimes, along with the Parkers Sisters books – cozy mysteries following the adventures of three Glaswegian siblings. From the dark to the light you might say.

My latest novel is Banking on Murder – the first of the Parkers books. It sees Martha, Helen and Geri – three sister PIs from Glasgow tackle their biggest crime yet – the murder of a high-flying banker. Taken out of their comfort zones and thrown firmly to the financial lions, the Parkers are up to their necks in trouble from the off as they try to protect a grieving widow from ending up in the slammer.

I’m absolutely delighted to be taking part in Decades. As much as everyone moans that they can’t pick their favourite film/TV/show/book etc, we all secretly love it. And it’s a brilliant chance to revist good times gone by and look forward to even more special memories in the future. Without further ado, I present you my choices. Be gentle.

 

1960s – Dune by Frank Herbert

What a decade! The old adage that if you remember the sixties then you weren’t there. Which is certainly true for me as I wasn’t born for another twenty years. But in terms of cultural legacy and impact, there’s a strong argument to be made that we’re STILL feeling the effects of this particular decade so long on.

And that’s certainly true for the literary scene. There are thousands of possibilities I could have chosen from this decade. The later James Bond novels, John la Carre coming into his own, everything Arthur C Clarke touching turning to gold – and that’s just in the spy and sci-fi genres. I could literally go on forever.

That said, I’m going to pick one and that’s Frank Herbert’s Dune. I was gifted a Dune omnibus for Christmas when I was about 15 and that was me hooked. I can’t get enough of this series, this world, this universe that Herbert created. There’s always been something deeply fascinating about the construction of Dune’s cosmos that’s always triggered that innate, cerebral part of my reading brain that just wants more and more and more.

As a child of the 1990s, what makes all of Dune even MORE incredible is that it pre-dates Star Wars by a considerable margin. Released in 1965 – right slap, bang in the middle of the swinging sixties, it has all the hallmarks of a space opera that we all take for granted now. Ancient mysterious races, intergalactic politics, cosmic forces at play, the lot. It was and arguably still remains ahead of its time.

I also love that it’s one of the most quoted books as being ‘unfilmable’. There have been a few attempts at bringing it to the screen, each with its own merit. And another massive all-star cast blockbuster on its way later this year. I don’t like the ‘unfilmable’ tag as I don’t believe that with the right motivation and tact, you can translate any great bit of literature to another medium. But it’s a testimony to Herbert’s vision, forthrightness and general delivery that his masterpiece remains one of the hardest challenges even to this day.

 

1970s – Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson

Ah, the 1970s – the decade that style forgot. Brown carpets, brown walls, brown curtains… just brown. It’s the sobering aftermath of the liberated 1960s and my god did the world feel a comedown and a half.

Step into the fray Hunter Stockton Thompson – a man seemingly built to cause chaos and mayhem wherever he went. As a full-time journalist, I can’t help but feel my teeth itch and imagine the stress and strain he must have put his editor under. I can tell you right now that HST wouldn’t cut it in the modern newsroom. Search engine optimisation, social media stats and paid for posts just wouldn’t fly with this man.

But that’s okay. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is about as mental and bloody-minded as the whole 70s decade could get. Sent to cover a race for Sports Illustrated, only he could file copy that became “a savage journey into the heart of the American dream.”

It’s not an easy read. And yes, even I admit that it’s dated beyond all recognition. But isn’t that the point? Fear and Loathing is a literary time capsule and look into a world that was very much trying to come up with its own identity. It’s hailed as the defining work of so called ‘Gonzo’ journalism which, for more reasons than I can care to remember, are now a long-distant memory.

That’s why I like it. I try to read it at least once every couple of years and have done since I was in my early 20s. The book itself is overrated, pumped up and given plaudits by people who mostly haven’t read it. It’s been taken over by stoner and undergraduate stoner culture who like to treat it as their bible on how to live a rock and roll lifestyle… without actually having to live said rock and roll lifestyle.

I treat myself to these little re-reads to remind myself of what it must have been like back then. But I don’t take it too seriously. That, I think, was HST’s point.

 

1980s – Money by Martin Amis

It seems only appropriate for the decade that made braces popular, Filofax a thing and introduced us all to the horrors of mobile phones that my choice features money in the title. Semi-autobiographical, the sheer rudeness of Amis’ style and confrontational of his characters are what stick in my mind.

I was introduced to the book around 2010 when there was a BBC adaptation for TV starring Nick Frost. I enjoyed the series but I prefer the book (if I had a £1 coin for every time I’ve said that…).

It’s loud. It’s garish. It’s in your face. It’s ugly. It’s boozy. It’s angry. And above all else, it rings true to the world it was unleashed into. For my money (pun intended) there are no better cutting satirists than Amis. And while I’m not a massive fan of ALL of his work (not that he gives a toss of course) – this one really stands out for me.

And I can’t talk about Money without mentioning the fact the central character is called John Self. Every time it comes up in the book it feels like a weighty sledgehammer of tongue-in-cheek irony that never gets old. This is a book that is bored itself to sleep by only being a book. And Amis fills every page, every sentence even, with that charged venom that can only make you want to be a better writer.

 

1990s – Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby 

I think this was my toughest choice. When it comes to picking books for this list, I tried to immediately think of something that sums up their decade of publication perfectly. And it was a toss-up between this and Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh. In the end I’ve gone for Fever Pitch, mostly because there are still parts of Trainspotting I can’t decipher – despite living on the border of the New Town and Leith for over three years!

Released in the same year as the start of the new Premier League, I genuinely can’t think of another writer who could capture the site, sounds, smells and soul of the decade that has, more than any other, shaped the way we do things now.

His characterisation of a die-hard football fan almost created the prototype of how the sport would go on to look over the next 20+ years. Gone is the tattooed casual, in its place a normal human being who absolutely loves the game and everything that goes around with it. More importantly, it’s the way Hornby uses the footie as a mechanism to tell what is ultimately a story about hope and growing up.

This is another of my go-too reads if I’m looking for a pick-me-up or a bit of nostalgia. Again I didn’t read it for the first time until my 20s and by that point the world had moved on from Hornby’s early 1990s utopia. But as a child who grew up while all of this unfolded around his ever growing ears – it’s always a lovely jaunt down memory lane to pick it up and re-enjoy.

 

 

2000s – The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown 

I think I can hear your scoffing from here. But I beg of you, before I’m carted away by the taste police, just hear me out. There IS a logic to this, I promise.

Released in 2003, this is the first novel I can ever remember being what you would call a blockbuster. It was EVERYWHERE. From reviews to TV interviews, scandal and sacrilege seemed to court this novel wherever it went – which was quite literally every corner of this blue and green marble we call a planet. If it wasn’t being condemned for its topic it was being blasted for its style.

Now, no matter what you think of Mr Brown or this novel, you have to agree that it’s a pretty hard gig to achieve both notoriety AND sell a bazillion copies at the same time. Any publicity is good publicity – as a certain former President used to like to remind us. It’s to that end that I hold The Da Vinci Code dear.

It’s also one of the first books I read as a late schoolboy that I genuinely enjoyed for the first time in what felt like forever. Compulsory reading lists, endless essays and forensic analysis for exams etc meant that I spent about five years of my teenage life reading for necessity instead of fun. And for a boy who had grown up reading non-stop for escapism and adventure, that was a pretty hard pill to swallow.

I am, if nothing else, a contrarian. I bought my copy from Borders in Glasgow city centre. I took it to the counter, a smug satisfaction oozing out of my school uniform as I handed over the crumpled tenner for this book that EVERYONE hated. I was going to read it, damn it, and I didn’t care what you all thought of me. Oh to be 17 again.

To my surprise, and bitter disappointment, I loved it. There’s a very good argument to be made that The Da Vinci Code set me off on what’s been an unbroken path of non-stop reading since that moment. And if I hadn’t gotten all the way through it back then, I fear my career as an author, if not life in general, might have been VERY different.

There’s something to be said for genre fiction and big, blundering thrillers like this. Sometimes, just sometimes, they go a long way to opening doors that might, for one reason or another, have closed forever.

 

My thanks to Jonathan for these thumping suggestions. I never fail to be surprised by the books which are suggested for inclusion but if you had told me six months ago that The Da Vinci Code made the cut before Shogun, Wild Swans or anything by Jackie Collins I would have been stunned.  I also had a moment of wistful nostalgia – Borders in Glasgow was one of my favourite bookshops and I miss it deeply.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Nick Quantrill

If you wanted to assemble a library of the very best books which have been published and you knew you would never be able to complete this mammoth task alone then you would get in touch with booklovers and ask them to help.  Well you would do that if you were me because that’s what I have done.

In January I began to assemble the Decades Library.  I invite a guest to join me and ask them to nominate five books which they think should be added to my Ultimate Library.  I set just two rules which govern the choice of books (sometimes my guests follow the rules)

Rule 2: You can only choose one book per decade over five consecutive decades

 

This week I am delighted to be joined by Nick Quantrill.  I am hugely grateful to Nick for finding time to consider which books should be added to my Library and I was itching to see which books he selected.  Nick always lights up my Twitter feed with a combination of his contributions to some amazing interview panels and also his Hull City football tweets – both brighten my days considerably.

 

Decades

Nick Quantrill was born and raised in Hull, an isolated industrial city in East Yorkshire. His Private Investigator novels featuring Joe Geraghty are published by Fahrenheit Press with the latest being ‘Sound of the Sinners’. Nick is also the co-founder of the Hull Noir crime writing festival.

1970s – “Jack’s Return Home” by Ted Lewis

Maybe an obvious choice for a co-founder of Hull Noir, but I can’t ignore the credentials of one of our own. On one level, it’s a timeless tale of revenge told through the eyes of anti-hero, Jack Carter, as he leaves London and heads north to the Humber region to avenge the death of his brother. Of course, we know the tale well  due to the film it created, ‘Get Carter’, but read the book and you get a sense of Lewis’s power as a writer. Much like William McIlvanney, Lewis was pioneering something new, something that would stand the test of time. It’s a powerful fusing of the hardboiled American style of crime writing with the social realities of northern England as it started a new decade. Lewis would go on to write a better novel in the form of “GBH”, but this one is undoubtedly a building block of modern British crime writing.

 

 

1980s – “Freaky Deaky” by Elmore Leonard

No library of crime writing is complete without some representation for Elmore Leonard, and although Dutch enjoyed a career spanning almost sixty years, the 1980s capture him at his peak. A high standard indeed. As ever, the focus is on the street and the characters you’re likely to meet. Abbot and Gibbs are fresh out of prison and have a score settle, as well as their services as bomb making experts to sell. Things never run smoothly in a Leonard caper, and so it transpires, as they’re tracked by a world-weary cop. Set in Detroit, the site of all his best work, it’s fast, fun and furious with dialogue that sizzles on the page. Often imitated, but never beaten, Elmore Leonard remains the greatest of the greats.

 

 

 

1990s – “Divorcing Jack” by Colin Bateman

I’d stopped reading as a teenager and only rediscovered my love of it in the mid-nineties as I left those years behind. Irvine Welsh was brilliant, as were Nick Hornby and Roddy Doyle, but Colin Bateman was something else. I’d never really understand how edgy and dangerous writing could be, but still remain fun and playful. “Divorcing Jack” introduces us to journalist, Dan Starkey, Belfast his beat. Starkey’s a mess, and after being thrown out by his long-suffering wife, he sleeps with the daughter of an influential politician and opens up a whole can of worms that threaten his life. The start of a long-running series and the basis of a decent film starring David Thewlis, it shows how crime fiction can tackle serious issues from a left field perspective and use humour as its weapon.

 

2002s – “Exit Music” by Ian Rankin

No library is complete without at least one book by Ian Rankin in it, and such is the consistency of the DI Rebus series, it’s no exaggeration to say you can pretty much pick a personal favourite. Once Rankin and Rebus hit their stride with “Black and Blue”, it’s the gold standard. At the time, “Exit

Music”, was billed as the final Rebus novel, and no doubt genuinely so. As ever, Rebus is thrown into a complex murder investigation, possibly a mugging gone wrong, but it’s certainly no random attack. Whip smart with its social commentary, the city of Edinburgh is the quiet star of the show. And as we now know, there was to be a route back for Rebus.

 

 

 

2010s – “Weirdo” by Cathi Unsworth

Despite being longlisted for the Theakston Crime Novel of the Year, “Weirdo”, feels like the one that got away. Maybe it’s because it’s a rare contemporary crime novel from the writer, rather than the historical work that has made her name, but it’s the perfect meeting point of lived experience and imagination. Set in a fictionalised version of Cathi’s home town, the flashbacks to 1984 and the world of teenage Goths draws on her days as a music journalist. The contemporary time line arguably anticipates the current popularity of claustrophobic small town stories, but also features the chilling life-like characters that inhabit such places, showing how they maintain their grip and power by any means necessary. Throw in murder, corruption and a Private Investigator with something to prove, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a modern classic.

 

 

This seems an almost perfect mix of titles. We have new books by returning authors and some new authors who are joining the Library for the first time.  My thanks to Nick for joining me and taking on the Decades challenge.

Decades: Compliling the Ultimate Library with Nicolás Obregón

This is Decades.  Each week I invite a guest to select five books which they would want to see included in my Ultimate Library – the aim is to curate a new Library from the starting point of zero books and have the shelves bursting with terrific titles.

My guests are given two rules (which are often very well stretched as you will soon see):

If you are wondering why my introduction is shorter than usual it is because my guest this week has done all the heavy lifting for me. An utterly absorbing sequence of selections from Nicolás Obregón – I yield the floor.

DECADES

Right, then. Hello. Who am I? Well, I’m Nicolás—pronounced Nico-lass, but everyone just calls me Nic anyway. I’m a British/Spanish dual-national, born in London, and I grew up between the two capitals. (My father is Spanish, my mother is French). In 2016, I moved to Los Angeles and have been grinning up at palm trees and wearing loud shirts ever since. I recently became an American citizen meaning that my passport draw now looks like it belongs to Jason Bourne.

More importantly, I’m the author of the Inspector Iwata series, a trilogy about a lonely Japanese detective—Blue Light Yokohama (2017), Sins As Scarlet (2018), Unknown Male (2019). Jeffery Deaver has called one of my books a masterpiece, while AJ Finn was left awestruck. A short story I wrote, Colibrí, appeared in the anthology BOTH SIDES: Stories from the Border (2020), which was recently nominated for an Anthony Award. Colibrí was labelled by Publishers Weekly as a poignant standout.

As for what I’m working on now, I’m at the business end of a third draft for my fourth (and first non-Iwata) book for Penguin/Michael Joseph, which I can’t talk too much about. I’m also in negotiations re: a true crime podcast that, you guessed it, I can’t say too much about. Finally, seeing as I live in Los Angeles, I plan to embrace the cliché and write a screenplay at the end of the year. But that’s enough about me, on to the good stuff!

 

Now, initially, I tried to pick favourite books for Decades. But every time I thought I’d whittled my list down to five, I’d suddenly doubt everything—a deer caught in the headlights of all I was overlooking. Instead, I’ve gone for five books that have influenced me. And by that, I mean: books that have shaped me first as a reader, and then as an author. Without them, it’s not that I wouldn’t be half the writer I am today. It’s that I simply wouldn’t be one.

2010s—Patria by Fernando Aramburu

As a young child, I remember sleeping next to my father and being woken by a cataclysmic bang. He pulled me under the bed, swearing under his breath in Spanish: sons of bitches, sons of bitches. One of his friends growing up was murdered by ETA, a car bomb intended for the military father. To my dad, every ETA bomb, every gunshot, every death threat or extortion attempt was like a personal affront. His outrage, perhaps, helped him cope with the dread. But this didn’t make him unique.

Growing up in Spain, spending my summers and winters there, it seemed that almost everyone was touched in some way by the decades-long terror campaign—third degree skin burns of separation. This is the backdrop to Aramburu’s 2016 novel that would become both a literary sensation in Spain and throughout Europe, (35th print run, translated into over 30 languages), as well as the recent well-received HBO adaptation.

Murder, (in the form of a compelling whodunit), friendship, loyalty, grief, ostracism, letting sleeping dogs lie vs staying silent in the face of barbarity—all these things unfurl through the 600+ page Homeric saga that is Patria (Homeland). But Aramburu, who has lived in Germany since the mid 80s, harnesses these broad themes and lion-tames them into two 50s-something women: Bittori and Miren. (Incidentally, their portrayal by Elena Irureta and Ane Gabarain is a work of art, I would urge readers to seek out the HBO series for these two alone). Because while Patria contains terrorists and bombs and gunshots, it’s first and foremost a story about victimhood and the human cost of violence. This is, inexplicably, so often overlooked in fiction, horror and bloodshed favoured over the tricky business of rebuilding lives and trying to exist with trauma. Aramburu’s novel understands that the wounds of this violence are still fresh, and the victims of it were everywhere (alongside ETA’s terror campaign, GAL also operated in Spain and Southern France—a death squad made up of former police officers who are, to this day, officially unofficial).

Now that said, I might have made it sound like Patria is a depressing slog. It’s quite the opposite. The Basque Country is almost a character in its own right, its language and culture showcased beautifully for what it is—one of the most distinctive and unique regions on earth. But like One Hundred Years of Solitude, this novel is also about life itself. There are relationships, betrayals, triumphs, gossiping, and jokes that had me laughing out loud. Milestones in Spanish history are also convincingly overlaid throughout the narrative.

What Aramburu attempts could read like a telenovela on paper. And yet what he pulls is a graceful and heartfelt rendering of the past and the present that, while concerning fictional characters, very much feels like non.

 

2000s—Le Corbeau (The French Film Guides) by Judith Mayne

This is cheating a little because the book is largely an excuse for me to talk about the film. But the rules do state that any book is acceptable so onward we march. Credit where it’s due, Judith Mayne’s work deftly analyses Le Corbeau’s deeply compelling darknesses and guides the reader through its manifold possible interpretations—the film standing, as it does, as one of the most important pieces in the cinema of paradox.

While nominally about a small French town gripped in the hysteria of a spate of poison pen letters (actually based on a true story in 1920s rural France), Henri-Georges Clouzot is not really examining these events. He is, instead, telling a story about the German occupation of France while exploring the mechanics of informing on your neighbour. It’s particularly fascinating considering he produced the movie for Continental Films, founded by Goebbels himself. After the war, Clouzot would be banned for life from the industry as a Nazi collaborator, though this would be overturned in favour of a two-year interdiction after much campaigning by the likes of Sartre.

This despite the fact Goebbels himself would telegram Clouzot after viewing the film, furious that, while Le Corbeau was a work of genius, it was subversive, and it might make France think for itself. You are paid to make empty films, Goebbels pointedly reminded him.

Upon its release, the Catholics would decry it for its sexual themes and open depiction of abortion, while the Communists would reject Le Corbeau for its unheroic characterisation of France. As Bertrand Tavernier would say in a 2002 interview, Clouzot made a film about the truth. But sometimes, some things are too true. Though banned for decades, its cultural impact remains undeniable. To this day, the French word corbeau—raven—is understood to mean someone who writes anonymous letters with intended malfeasance.

I first saw the film with my French grandmother, whose own mother was a member of the French Resistance throughout the war. On her birthday each year she would receive a letter from the President of the Republic in thanks. (“He won’t bloody leave me alone,” she would always say with a wink). They were both from a tiny village near the Dordogne and the politics and cruelties of small-town gossip are absolutely captured in Le Corbeau.

It’s a sumptuous film, full of hypocrisy, intrigue, and sexuality. Each shot is a charcoal sketch, and each character, no matter how minor, feels like a real person. But the reason this story will always stay with me is because it is, I think, my first memory of the figure of a detective.

As the plot races towards its noir-ish (before noir existed) conclusion and the identity of the true author of the poison pen letters is revealed, two doctors size each other up in an empty classroom (next door to where the local prosecutor is testing the handwriting of the 18 remaining suspects).

Doctor Rémy Germain, smooth-talking and handsome, philosophically clashes with the wily and colourful old psychiatrist, Doctor Michel Vorzet, whose young wife the former is having an affair with.

Vile beast?” Vorzet smiles enigmatically. “But I see one in the mirror each morning, alongside an angel. You are amazing—you think that people are all good, or all bad. You think that good is the light, and that evil is the darkness…” Vorzet swings the lightbulb in front of his face, like a pendulum. “But where is the darkness? Where is the light…?” he falls into shadow, then back into light as his knowing smile is illuminated. “And do you know which side you’re on?

This was not the moment I first knew I wanted to write books. But it is certainly the moment that I knew I wanted to write detective stories.

 

1990s—Out by Natsuo Kirino

Sometimes you love something so much it’s hard to elucidate. For me, Out is one such love. Originally published in 1997, the novel was translated in 2004 and promptly nominated for an Edgar (Kirino would lose out to Rankin’s Resurrection Men). While Rebus has obviously stood the test of time, for me, Out is one of the finest mystery novels—not just of 2004/1997—but of the entire modern canon. (Even the title of the book is a work of economical genius).

Sparse, poetic, kinetic, darkly hilarious, and utterly claustrophobic, it’s a masterclass in the crafting of domestic mystery and how one split second can change lives forever. On paper, it’s about four women working nights at a factory, the murder of an abusive husband in self-defence, and divvying up insurance money in exchange for sworn silence. Taken in isolation, that could sound like an episode of The Bill. But through it, Kirino trains her large magnifying glass on jealousy, loneliness, class structure, lust, misogyny, hatred and, ultimately, the desperation of what it is to be a woman in an empty suburban existence — all of it set against a backdrop of Japan’s economic downturn. Of course, these aren’t small themes. Yet one of Kirino’s many gifts is her ability to effortlessly condense the macro to the micro, entire existences understood in two lines:

When stones lying warm in the sun were turned over, they exposed the cold, damp earth underneath; and that was where Masako had burrowed deep. There was no trace of warmth in this earth, yet for a bug curled up tight, it was a peaceful and familiar world.”

As a 19-year-old dreaming about my own novel one day, Kirino lit a fire in the dark for me. Not just in terms of her exquisitely realised Tokyo. But her ability to birth characters with secrets and fears—inner worlds that threaten to spill out into the external.

 

1980s—The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

This entry was a hair’s breadth from being Gorky Park by Martin Cruz Smith, particularly as a shining exemplar of an author writing outside of their native geography and culture which, later on, would be so important to me.

But in the end, those bloody lambs just won’t shut up. The way I see it, there are crime novels and then there’s the Silence of the Lambs. In Clarice Starling, Harris created one of the most interesting heroes in any genre, with an irresistible character arc that would give rise to a million scriptwriting workshops (and, in the collective psyche, pair liver with a nice Chianti forevermore).

Now, before I go on to glorify the book, I do want to say that I am, of course, aware of the controversy surrounding its depiction of transgenderism. While poorly-equipped to contribute to that conversation, I do feel it’s important Hannibal Lecter explicitly states in the story that Wild Bill is not, in fact, transgender. Still, I absolutely understand that any representation of transgenderism as some kind of vaudevillian freakshow is less than helpful, particularly if platformed by powerful voices. Still, if intent matters at all, I don’t believe Harris ever set out to do such a thing. With all that said, I’m yet to hear of a single detractor of the book for its quality.

It is, simply put, a masterwork. And while this taut, elegant novel spills over with suspense and narrative chicanery, it’s the characters that really set it apart. Unforgettable is an over-used word but the much-loved psychological chess game between Starling and the charming but diabolical archfiend, Hannibal Lecter, will live forever. So gripping is their relationship that it renders the actual antagonist of the story, Buffalo Bill, almost secondary.

As early as page 4, we are being warned about the nightmare to come. After all, Starling first hears of Lecter in the form of a warning:

“…It’s the kind of curiosity that makes a snake look in a bird’s nest… We both know that in interviews you have to back-and-forth a little but tell him no specifics. Starling, you do not want any of your personal facts inside his head.

And, just like that, we know this is precisely what’s going to happen.

For my money, it should be a staple on creative writing courses everywhere. But as a young aspiring writer, what really illuminated me was the way Harris binds together the steadily rising stakes in the external world, with internal one building inside Clarice also.

 

1970s—One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

Originally published in 1967, Gabo’s magnum opus was translated into English three years later. (I’m aware I’m doing the opposite of what I did with Out—sorry for playing fast and loose with the rules, Gordon!)

Just over a decade on, he’d be receiving the Nobel Prize, firmly established as a living, breathing Latin American Tolstoy or Cervantes. Today, Cien años de soledad stands as The White Album of magical realism, the very paragon of Latin American literature in its entirety, having sold some 45 million copies—almost the entire population of Colombia. Not for nothing does he grace the 50,000-peso bank note.

Studied, adored, and devoured all over the world, so many have written so richly on this magical (wink) book, it almost felt like too obvious a choice. But this being a list of books that influenced me, I simply cannot disregard Cien años. Of course, Gabo’s art for treating the supernatural as mundane is widely-studied but picking this book up at 13 or 14 years of age, I was utterly bewitched. Macondo, no matter what happens there, always feels real and lived in. Omens, curses, prophecies—all of it somehow feels possible in the world García Márquez weaves together. But beyond the what, is the how. Never before had I been so mesmerised by words. His use of language is always elemental, even for a simple background banality. Consider this description of a priest collecting for a new church:

He went everywhere begging alms with a copper dish. They gave him a large amount, but he wanted more, because the church had to have a bell that would raise up the drowned to the surface of the water. He pleaded so much he lost his voice. His bones began to fill with words.”

It’s been said before but this book is life itself. As William Kennedy put it in a New York Times review: This is the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race.

I encourage anyone reading this, whatever their stance on magical realism, to throw themselves at this book if they’re yet to experience it. I promise you, by the time you get to the end, you’ll scarcely believe it’s over. But long after it is, the words of Márquez will fill your bones too.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Danny Marshall

I never fail to be surprised by the selections made by my Decades guests.  Until I recieve the email with their choices they give nothing away about the books which they may choose.  However, when I first asked Danny Marshall if he would like to take on my Decades Challenge I had no idea that he would introduce three of fiction’s most famous characters to the Library.

For new readers a quick Decades recap.  I am inviting guests to nominate books which they believe should be included in the Ultimate Library.  Or to put it another way: if I had to fill a new library with the best books out there, but I was starting with zero books on the shelves, which books should be added?  I cannot make these tough choices so my guests are invited to add their favourite books.

There are just two rules governing their choices:

DECADES

I’m D.L. Marshall – better known as Danny (but unfortunately that’s not a very authorly name) – and my debut novel Anthrax Island was published recently. Described by some as Alistair MacLean meets Agatha Christie, it’s a claustrophobic locked-room mystery (in the literal sense) meets adventure thriller.

Anthrax Island is a real place off remote north-western Scotland, having received its sinister moniker in the tabloids when top-secret files were declassified. Its real name is Gruinard, and it was used by the Ministry Of Defence during the second world war to test biological weapons, leaving it a lethally contaminated no-go zone for decades. The government finally (and begrudgingly) cleaned it up in the Eighties, declaring it anthrax-free in the Nineties, though given the extreme hardiness of anthrax spores some people remain unconvinced!

The premise of the novel is that a team of scientists have returned to the island due to a resurgence of bacteria. Their only technician is dead, a victim of anthrax poisoning, and their base has suffered a malfunction. Enter our hero Tyler, a replacement technician flown out to fix the base. He quickly discovers sabotage, and works out his predecessor was murdered. Soon after, another team member is murdered inside a sealed room in the base with Tyler right outside the door – but when he enters seconds later the killer has vanished. Now with a storm closing in, the radios destroyed, and the bodies piling up, it seems they’re trapped on the island with a far more dangerous killer than anthrax…

I’m honoured to take part in decades, having read previous entries with great interest! There have already been some absolute belters already added to the library, so I hope I can do it justice. Though there were some difficult choices – I could talk for hours about the ones I left out – I had great fun picking my entries. I could have chosen any number of crime and espionage thrillers from the mid-to-late Twentieth century, but I decided to take my fifty years a little earlier to encompass some of my very favourite and most re-read novels of all time. They’re also all novels that have influenced my writing a great deal, and all feature in Anthrax island in some way.

 

1890s

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897)

Does any other single word in the world of fiction evoke such an emotional response? How many other book titles are so well known? I think you could make a case for it being the most influential book of all time; fiction, films, pop culture, it’s a staggering legacy. Stoker didn’t invent vampires, horror, or gothic fiction, but he did weave them all into a fantastically modern narrative that popularised all the right elements. It’s a story of an ancient evil assaulting the modern world that we’ve loved ever since, from Lovecraft to Carpenter. I only found out fairly recently that it wasn’t a huge success in Stoker’s lifetime – it did okay and was well received (Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a glowing letter to Stoker), but he died poor. It wasn’t until the landmark copycat film Nosferatu in the Twenties – and the subsequent legal dispute – that the book took off, and since the first Hollywood Dracula film a few years later the book has never been out of print.

I’ve just looked at my shelves and I currently own seven copies of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the latest being a graphic novel my partner bought for me to read with my son. The particular reason I love it may be down to my final year of primary school, when we had a week’s residential in Whitby. The teachers wouldn’t take a bunch of ten year olds in ‘The Dracula Experience’ but we spent our money in the gift shop, then sat up at night in our shared room, telling ghost stories while looking out of the window at the ruins of the abbey across the harbour. As a Yorkshireman I love that Whitby section, and the newspaper reports of the wild dog roaming the North Yorkshire moors, but actually my favourite is the opening – Harker’s dangerous voyage through the Carpathian Mountains to meet his mysterious host. The wolves, the warnings from locals, the superstitious coachman, all now absolute staples of horror films. The opening of Anthrax Island was written as a homage. Bonus points if you can spot which character from Anthrax Island is named for something in Dracula…

 

1900s

Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901-1902)

Another of the most famous books ever written! Spoilers (although it’s a century old, where have you been?) When first serialised it brought Holmes back from the dead, since he was killed at the Reichenbach Falls in 1893’s ‘The Final Problem’. Conan Doyle was adamant Holmes wouldn’t return, so when public opinion forced him to write another story he stubbornly set it before his death. However, the success of Baskervilles was such that he finally relented and truly resurrected Holmes.

I have seven copies of Dracula but I have ten copies of The Hound of the Baskervilles! I’ve read it at least once a year since I was a kid. Apart from being my favourite book of all time, it is – in the opinion of Sherlock scholars – the best Holmes novel. I love stories that tread the line between crime and horror, and for me this is the epitome. Ghostly lights on the moor, an ancient creaking hall, and a bloodthirsty spectral hound. Dartmoor is itself also a character, beautifully described in vivid autumnal shades, leaf-strewn deeply rutted lanes, and tumbling streams. But at night the moors take on another character, creeping shadowy figures and drifting lights, bogs that can swallow unwary ponies whole, the howling wind and howling… other things… echoing down through the yews at the back of the hall. I live in the Yorkshire Pennines, minutes from the moors, and can well imagine Sir Charles Baskerville standing at his gate, smoking his cigar and straining his eyes into that blackness. And something looking back.

My favourite scenes are those which show Watson’s journey to the hall and the various soldiers on horseback at crossroads and the railway station, rifles at the ready, on the lookout for the convict escaped from Dartmoor prison. It’s wonderfully echoed in the best Harry Potter film – The Prisoner of Azkaban – a film about a Barghest, a giant dog of legend, featuring Dementors scouring the moors for an escaped convict.

It’s no coincidence I’ve just finished writing a novel set on Dartmoor (which may feature a cameo from Baskerville Hall)!

 

1910s

John Buchan’s The 39 Steps (1915)

This might be the last one where I share the number of copies I own, as I’ve only got four of this! The 39 Steps set the blueprint for all adventure thrillers, and specifically the device of the everyday innocent man on the run from baddies and the authorities alike, which is now used so regularly we forget that in 1915 it would have blown peoples’ minds. This was a time when the police and authorities were to be trusted implicitly, good and bad was usually fairly black and white, so while the patriotism and sense of derring-do can seem a bit dated, to have a hero on the run from the law must have been pretty exciting at the time. Hitchcock filmed it in 1935 and went on to use the trope several more times, including in one of my favourite films, North By Northwest. However, my favourite film adaptation of The 39 Steps is the ‘70s version that leaves Robert Powell hanging from the hands of Big Ben (Yes I know Big Ben is the bell, don’t @ me).

The MacGuffin is some kind of secret plans for Britain’s entry into the first world war, stolen by German agents operating in England – which is interesting when you remember this was published in 1915, at the start of the first world war. It wasn’t a historical novel, it was really happening at the time! The scene escaping from the train across the moors sticks in mind the most (is there a moors theme developing?).

I was lucky enough to see the four-actor play in London a few years ago. It closed in 2015 but I’d highly recommend seeing it if you ever get the chance somewhere.

 

1920s

Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair At Styles (1921)

Okay, I’ll admit it – this is not my favourite Agatha Christie novel – but it’s my choice for the Twenties as it warrants its place in the library by virtue of its significance. This is Agatha Christie’s first published novel, and thus it is also the first appearance of one of the most famous detectives of all time, Hercule Poirot. I don’t think I need to explain any more!

It features all the very best elements of a whodunnit – a sprawling, isolated country house filled with an untrustworthy cast, twists and reveals, red herrings, and of course, a dead body with a contested will. Christie set her own template for her future books here, being very fair with readers, providing all the clues you need to solve the crime (though you rarely do).

It’s beautifully  fitting that Agatha Christie had Poirot return to Styles in her final novel (before her death, anyway) – Curtain.

Sidenote, if you’re ever in Devon and on Dartmoor, after visiting the infamous prison (hopefully no escaped convicts) and the Princetown visitors’ centre (with its huge Hound of the Baskervilles sculpture) take a trip to Agatha Christie’s house at Greenway, upriver from Dartmouth. And if you’re ever in London, go see The Mousetrap. Great fun.

 

1930s

John Dickson Carr’s The Hollow Man (1935)

Calling all Jonathan Creek fans, this is nothing whatsoever to do with Kevin Bacon’s updated take on The Invisible Man, it’s another whodunnit that treads the line between horror and crime. But this is also an ingenious howdunnit, a true locked-room murder mystery – the best, in fact, and one of my very favourite books ever.

A mysterious and macabre-looking stranger barges into a room in a house, in full view of witnesses, to kill a man – yet when the door is opened the killer and weapon has vanished, leaving only his dying victim, who claims his brother (long thought dead) was responsible. Minutes later the brother is found dead in the middle of a nearby street, with the gun in question – himself killed impossibly, surrounded by unbroken snow.

The book is considered the finest example of locked-room mystery, and contains a fantastic section in the middle where the narrator breaks the fourth wall and sets off on a monologue to explain every single scenario by which an ‘impossible crime’ can be carried out – and thoroughly debunks each in turn relative to what happened here. It’s a wonderfully bold move. And just like Agatha Christie, Carr plays fair – the reader has all the clues, but I challenge you to work it out.

This book has been a huge influence on me, it’s not a surprise that my own debut – and the sequel out later this year – are at their cores impossible crime locked-room murder mysteries.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Douglas Skelton

For the first time in the Decades series I have a returning guest.  Not someone who has already taken part in Decades but an author who has previously joined me as a guest to chat about books.  Before this year I had not hosted any guests at Grab This Book for around three years.  In the first four years of blogging I actually hosted many brilliant authors and ran some recurring features which have since been put out to pasture.

One of the features I ran was called Serial Heroes.  I love an ongoing series with recurring characters and I invited authors to join me to chat about the ongoing series of books they enjoyed and looked forward to reading. That idea came from hearing today’s guest, Douglas Skelton, chatting to readers as part of the North Lanarkshire Libraries Encounters festival.  Douglas told the audience that he had been a big fan of the Ed McBain 87th Precinct stories and my immediate reaction was: YES!  I wanted to know which books were read by the authors I was reading. So I jumped the gun slightly when introducing Douglas Skelton.  As a former journalist he will appreciate that I have checked these facts from two different sources:

Douglas Skelton has published twelve non fiction books and eight thrillers (many of which have received glowing reviews on this blog). He has been a bank clerk, tax officer, shelf stacker, meat porter, taxi driver (for two days), wine waiter (for two hours), reporter, investigator and editor.

He is one quarter of the hilarious “Four Blokes in search of a Plot” and visitors to Bloody Scotland cannot fail to have been impressed the year Douglas played a key role in the Scotland vs England football match (he was the pre-match announcer). He also wrote the 2019 sold-out show You The Jury which wowed audiences at the festival when a criminal trial was recreated with audience members invited to become members of the jury to hear the case and decide if the accused was guilty or innocent of the charges.

As is ever the case with Decades I asked Douglas to select five books he wanted to add to my Ultimate Library.  He could only select one book per decade and he must make his selections from five consecutive decades.

DECADES

I have a problem whenever I try to pick favourite books because as soon as I decide on one title, I think of a few more. I once vowed to be more decisive but then I changed my mind.

Anyway, here goes:

 

The Big Sleep – Raymond Chandler (1939)

I am a fan of US detective fiction and thrillers and, as you will see, I have been hugely influenced by both them and their movie counterparts. As anyone who has read the Dominic Queste books knows! I could have selected any one of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe books but went with this rich, complex tale of family deception and murder, told with his customary wit and style, not to mention some plot confusion. Who did kill the chauffeur? Who cares? This is literature masquerading as pulp – or maybe even the other way round – and I love it.

 

 

 

 

Shane, Jack Schaefer (1946)

 

This selection will come as no surprise as I constantly name it as one of my favourites. Again, incredibly influential to my work, particularly Davie McCall. It’s a western and the story has become timeless, I can think of at least three movies that rip it off. First published in instalments in 1946 then in expanded book form in 1949, Jack Schaefer’s reluctant gunslinger resonated with me when I read it for the first time as a teenager and has stayed with me ever since.

 

 

 

The Temple of Gold, William Goldman (1957)

I stumbled upon this book as a teenager in a batch given to me by my gran, who we called Nana. I knew the author, William Goldman, from his screenwork, particularly Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (when pressed, that’s my favourite movie. Then, as with books, I think of a dozen more). This was his first novel, a funny, moving rite of passage story which I have read and reread many times – and actually have two copies. One is the original which was in no great state to begin with but is extremely fragile thanks to the many re-reads. The other is a much late reprint.

 

 

 

 

 

Fuzz, Ed McBain (1968)

 

If memory serves, this acted as my introduction to the work of Ed McBain, although I read it in the 70s after seeing the movie version with Burt Reynolds. It spawned in me a deep affection for the 87th Precinct novels which remains to this day, even though McBain (or Evan Hunter, or Richard Marston or any of the other names he used – his real name was Salvatore Lombino) has left us. I still pick one up at random and have a read whenever the mood takes me.

 

 

 

Marathon Man, William Goldman (1974)

 

William Goldman again. He was, for me, the master of the reversal. Just when you think the story or a character is one thing, he suddenly twists it and you realise it’s something else entirely. He pulls a few such tricks in the book, most of which could not be replicated in the celebrated movie, although the celebrated – notorious – dentistry scene remains intact. Apart from that, this is a fine paranoid thriller that benefits greatly from Goldman’s use of humour as well as his ability to wrong-foot us! I wish I could write like that. Altogether now – is it safe?

Decades: Compilling the Ultimate Library with Imogen Church

The very best libraries are the ones which offer a broad selection of books to choose from.  Since January I have been inviting guests to join me in a quest to determine which books should be added to the Ultimate Library.  I started the Ultimate Library with no books so there was a clean slate (or empty shelves if you prefer) and I ask each guest to nominate the books they feel should be represented.

There are just two rules governing the selections each guest can make.

1- Choose Five Books
2 – You May Only Choose One Book Per Decade Over Five Consecutive Decades

In the past I have been made aware my two rules are “frustrating” and cause much gnashing of teeth.  Imagine then, if you will, my delight at hearing my guest this week found making her selections “easy” and the experience to be fun!

If you visit the blog outwith my Decades posts then you will know I am a massive fan of audiobooks and enjoy nothing more than having someone read me a brilliant story. If you were to peruse my Audbile Library you would see one name repeated over and over: Imogen Church.  If I am selecting my next listen and I see Imogen is the narrator (which happens often) then I am more likely to select that book over others.

I  ask my guests to introduce themselves before they introduce their books so it is with great pleasure I hand you over to Imogen Church.

DECADES

Well, hello there! My name is Imogen Church and I’m an actor and writer. If you are a massive bookworm (like me) then you may know me as the narrator of roughly a gabillion audiobooks. Possibly you know my voice from audio dramas like Dr Who (for Big Finish), or as the voice of the Harry Potter Quiz on Alexa UK? Probably you don’t know me at all, which is fine too, we’re all busy and you must have better things to do with your time than knowing who I am 

Basically, I’m a storyteller. Sometimes I tell that story with my voice, sometimes with my body and sometimes by tippidytappedy-tap-tapping away on a computer screen and writing my brain out. Mostly, I get paid to talk to myself in a recording studio all day and, for a somewhat shy actor who is obsessed with books, that’s the greatest job in the world. I just can’t get enough of books; I read all day every day, in my head and out loud into a microphone. I also write. Most of my writing has been screenplays for films, particularly satirical horror comedy, but last year Audible commissioned me to write a novel for Audible Originals, to be narrated by moi. They asked me to write a crime novel, so obviously I wrote a satirical comedy crime caper set in an alternate world of steampunk and strippers, called Death and the Burlesque Maiden. I mean, obviously, I did that. The book was inspired by my experiences as a burlesque performer combining satirical poetry and striptease, and my experiences of life as an intersectional feminist. For those of you who have listened to Death and the Burlesque Maiden, I suspect the below literary selection may make some small sense of my writing style… the things that inspire me are comedy, social satire, black humour, the macabre, and explorations of what it is to be a woman. Also, being rude.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
by Anita Loos (published 1926) 

 Women have always been funny; with the crap our bodies put us through, we have to have a sense of humour. A century ago, one genius of a woman wrote a brilliantly acerbic, funny satire about the attention certain women get from men and what that means for those women and for all the women who are trying desperately to become those women. It is so funny, so biting, so sharp and witty. And she wrote it a century ago. One hundred years in the past. Yet it is still relevant *Imogen sighs and stares off into the middle distance for a while* 

 

 

 

1930’s
Cold Comfort Farm
by Stella Gibbons (published 1932) 

Did I mention that women are funny? It’s always my objective in life, to try and ‘do a Gibbons’ at any given point in time. In Death and the Burlesque Maiden I got the chance to ‘do a Gibbons’ by breaking the fourth wall and having the narrator talk directly to the reader, about the novel, mostly deriding the quality of the writing. I remember when I first read Cold Comfort Farm, the shocking oh-my-god-did-she-just-do-that joy I felt when Stella declared that she was going to help the literary critics out, by highlighting the sections she’d written rather well thank you very much, making it easier for them to pluck out and glorify her name. Throughout the novel there are moments when a particularly flowery and pretentious sentence is flagged by an asterisk or three: for our consideration. I mean… the genius! It made me die laughing and I wanted to write my own homage when I got the chance. Cold Comfort Farm is a warm and quirky pastoral parody, a silly, eccentric, heartfelt satirical joy and easily one of the greatest books I have ever read. Obviously, you can disagree with me, but I’m afraid you’d be wrong. You would be wrong. 

 

1940’s
1984 by George Orwell (published 1949) 

Orwell. Just… Orwell. I first read 1984 as a teenager and it blew the top right off my head. As I scooped my brains back inside my skull, I realised that the book had changed the shape of my brains, for life. Nowadays, any satirical dystopia has me drooling to consume it, all because of 1984. I think 1984 was the first novel to give shape to the feeling I had, that we are extremely lucky, to be alive at this point in history, in this place in history, in a world where we can access and read someone like Orwell, and the very keen feeling that I must never take that for granted. Orwell knew how small we all are, but also how important every small person can be and his writing is the most wonderful combination of misery and hope, humour and horror. Orwell. Just… Orwell. 

 

 

1950’s
Wasp by Eric Frank Russell (published 1957) 

I initially tracked down and read this book when I met my (now) husband and my (now) fatherinlaw told me it was his favourite book and he read it every single year.  

Was I trying to impress him? Possibly!  

Did it work? Certainly!  

But did I also genuinely love the subversive, dystopian nature of it and the reminder that even the smallest individual matters? Absolutely!  

Terry Pratchett chose Wasp as one of his favourite books of all time and said that he “can’t imagine a funnier terrorists’ handbook”. I rest my case. 

 

1960’s
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller (published 1961) 

If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. Or kill yourself. This book makes you do the first two, but hopefully not the third. How else can you process the horrors of war, but to laugh through the pain? There are true horrors in Catch 22, true horrors and legitimately insane humour and those two are essential bedfellows.  

Why? 

Why does satire have such a hold on me? I think it’s all about power. Power, and impact for change. Satirising the terrifying, the inhumane, the oppressive, is a way to gain mastery over it. I love work that satirizes bigotry, predators, misogyny, Nazis… because mocking them gives me a feeling of power over them, that to laugh in the face of horrors, emboldens us. Also, satire is an entertaining inroad that makes for powerful impact. Humour softens an audience, it helps them relax and let down their barriers, the act of laughing releases endorphins that make us so much more susceptible… when an audience has let go of the stresses of real life, it enables the artist to get right in there, right under the ribs, right up in to the soft squishy heart of a person with ideas, ideas about cruelty and society and how to avoid moving backwards into persecution, racism, misogyny, fascism, all the things we really should be too grown up by now to be playing around with. I love art as entertainment, but I also want art to be something that helps us understand more about our lives, our world, our humanity.  

 

I think this is why these are some of my favourite books of all time; stories that are beyond precious to me and have clubbed together to form part of who I am. 

Which is why I love books.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Tim Baker

At the end of 2018 I collated my favourite books of the year.  This is something I do every year,  but in 2018 I gave the post the imaginative title of “Top Ten Reads of 2018” so it would be easily identifiable. On that list was a terrific book called City Without Stars.  This book remains one of the best books I have read since Grab This Book launched in 2014 – I was utterly swept away by it at the time. So before today’s guest can share his recommendations I will nip in early and urge you to seek out City Without Stars.   Just click the name and you will spring to a vendor who will sort you out with a copy!

The reason I mention City Without Stars is that my Decades guest this week is Tim Baker, author of the aforementioned book, and as Tim is going to be discussing books written by other people I wanted to make sure I got my cheerleading in first.

I wanted to know which books would be added to the Ulitmate Library if you started with no books and built up a Library from scratch. How to choose which books should be included? I could not possibly undertake this task alone so I invite booklovers to nominate five books to be added to the Ultimate Library.  To bring a degree of control to the process my guests must follow just two rules:

1 – Choose Any Five Books
2 – You May Only Choose One Book Per Decade From Any Five Consecutive Decades.

DECADES

Tim Beaulieu-Sur-Mer

 

 

Born into a show business family in Sydney, Tim Baker travelled extensively around Australia and Europe before moving to Rome at the age of 23. He later lived in Madrid before settling in Paris, where he wrote about jazz and became a French citizen. He has published a collection of short stories, Out From the Past with William Collins and two novels, the JFK-themed neo-noir, Fever City and the epic crime novel, City Without Stars, both with Faber. He currently lives in the South of France with his wife, their son, and two rescue animals, a dog and a cat. 

 

 

 

 

1930-1940 

AS I LAY DYING, William Faulkner, 1930 

“My mother is a fish.” 

I discovered this novel in our municipal library in Campsie, western Sydney, when I was 15. Our family was on the ropes. One of my parents’ theatrical ventures was going south and we were about to lose our home. Not for the last time, I desperately needed the distraction and solace of a good book and picked up my first Faulkner. I read As I Lay Dying in one sitting. It changed my life. 

 

 

 

1940-1950 

THE SHELTERING SKY, Paul Bowles, 1949 

“Reach out, pierce the fine fabric of the sheltering sky, take repose.” 

Port and Kit Moresby are not your ordinary, well-to-do American expatriates, eschewing the Riviera for the unexplored, “more authentic” experience of North Africa. As his name suggests, Port is attracted to wilder shores, whether they be physical or emotional, and as the couple begins to push deeper into the desert, their voyage becomes a searing journey into the collective soul of a couple and the limits of shared love in the modern world. And then halfway through the novel, something tragic and extraordinary happens that takes your breath away, thrusting Kit into unimaginable territory. A devastating, unforgettable read. 

 

 

1950-1960 

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, Boris Pasternak, 1958 

“How wonderful to be alive, he thought, but why does it always hurt?” 

What makes this novel so exceptional is the way it effortlessly inhabits two apparently contradictory worlds. One is a convincing and convulsive portrayal of a momentous moment in history – the turmoil, excitement and tragedy leading into and during the Russian Revolution, and the crushing despair that follows. The other is the poignant and intimate world of the two doomed lovers, Yuri and Lara, who must learn to live their brief, poetic moments together to the fullest, and to leave the rest to the meanderings of history and fate. The main themes of Zhivago, like all the other books in this selection, are our constant battle with despair and alienation, our sense of being both lonely and alone, and our desperate quest for the liberation of love. 

 

1960-1970 

WIDE SARGASSO SEA, Jean Rhys, 1966 

“One day it all falls away and you are alone” 

The creative audacity of Jean Rhys in taking Jean Eyre and turning it on its head with her creation of her protagonist, Antoinette Cosway/ Bertha Mason, is matched by her lush, insistent prose, haunted by the revenants of slavery, oppression, cruelty, injustice, magic and misogyny. The 1960s are often remembered for the bold flamboyance of its loud male authors – Mailer, Vidal, Vonnegut, Kesey et al – but this decade of post-colonial convulsion and women’s liberation found its most convincing voice in Rhys’ subversive masterpiece. A post-modernist classic that lingers like a guilty fever dream. 

 

 

1970-1980 

JR, William Gaddis, 1975 

“—Money . . . ? in a voice that rustled.” 

I can think of no other opening line that so brilliantly announces the theme of a book – in this case a blistering satire about America’s tortured self-enslavement to the almighty dollar. Long before The Bonfire of the Vanities, there was JR, the schoolboy/financial Wizard of Wall Street who can do no wrong so everyone else can do no right. Gaddis had been experimenting with writing plays in the three decades between his magnificent debut, The Recognitions and this, his second novel, and that work shines through in the book’s daring use of dialogue – multiple voices interposing different views, different lives, different lies – all cohering into a relentless but cohesive babble about bucks. Both horrifying and deeply funny, it remains the greatest fictional commentary on the insanity and insatiability of post-WWII capitalism. 

 

 

My thanks to Tim.  I think there can be little doubt there are some classics in the five which certainly should be included in every library.

Decades – Compiling the Ultimate Library with “Raven Crime Reads”

Another week and I bring word of a new booklover who is prepared to don the Hat of the Curator and help me select five books which are to be added to my Ulimate Library.

What is this Library?  Back in January I had the thought – if I were to build a library from scratch, no books on any shelves, which books would I need to ensure were included? Clearly this was too much of a challenge to take on personally so I started inviting guests to join me and I asked each of them to select five books to include in the Library.

Two Rules:
1 – Select Five Books
2 – Guests can only pick one book per decade over five consecutive decades.

 

My guest today is Raven from Raven Crime Reads. Raven and I began blogging around the same time and I often find when I am honoured with a review quote inside a book that Raven is also quoted in that same book.  We share a mutual appreciation of many authors.  However, as her selections will reveal, Raven reads a much broader range than I and she has a fabulous eye for choosing a brilliant story. There are many bookbloggers sharing the booklove but Raven’s reviews are ones I will always make time to read – I am thrilled she agreed to join me for this challenge.

I always invite my guests to introduce themselves so I hand over to Raven (who seemingly has another name too) and ask her to introduce her books.

Decades

Hi, this is Jackie aka Raven Crime Reads , a blog that I started 8 years ago following a very inspiring conversation at a crime festival with two excellent crime writers, William Ryan and William Shaw- my favourite type of bills. I’m also known for my poor jokes. I am a judge for the annual Petrona Award for Scandinavian Crime Fiction with the wonderful Kat Hall (Mrs. Peabody Investigates ) and Karen Meek (Euro Crime) focusing on one of the most popular sub genres of crime, and something that sings to the depths of my dark soul. Crikey. And swiftly moving on, although my blog is centred on my love of crime fiction, I read widely from fiction to horror to science to nature to history to whatever…

I’m now based in the South West of England after living up and down the country, and have been a bookseller with Waterstones for almost twenty years, which runs alongside my role as a commercial expert and buyer for stores in my local region. I have a BA in English Literature and an MA in British and American Fiction, and like many other people my love of reading was fostered from an early age. With my particular background, and books having been a bit of a luxury, libraries were an absolute lifeline as a book obsessed little kid. The holy grail of my adult library card at the age of ten, and having a voracious reader for a mum all the way, held me in good stead for my very book-related journey through life.

And so to Gordon’s challenge, and what a challenge, to find five favourite reads in five consecutive decades. I think I severely under-estimated this difficulty of this, as many scribblings, post-its and Googled publication dates later, it has taken some time to get this final five nailed down. But here they are in all their glory, beginning in the 1970’s through to the 2010s…

1970-1979 Maj Sjöwall &  Per Wahlöö – The Abominable Man (1971)

To be honest, I could have picked any one of the ten book series collectively titled The Story Of A Crime by the superb writing partnership of Maj Sjöwall &  Per Wahlöö, but have always loved this one in particular for the amount of peril their chief protagonist, homicide detective Martin Beck finds himself in. Undoubtedly this series of books, aside from influencing generations of Scandinavian crime writers, kickstarted my passion for the genre. With its emphasis on the socio-political climate of the time, the relatively pared down writing style and the accomplished structuring of compelling police procedurals, this series stood above its time, and ignited the passion for Scandinavian crime that has remained with me ever since.

 

 

 

1980- 1989 Mark Timlin- A Good Year For The Roses (1988)

Strongly influenced by Ed McBain, Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald, Mark Timlin’s series featuring  Nick Sharman, a former Met police officer turned private investigator in South London, was one I raced through in my late teens- A Good Year For The Roses is the first of the series. Having already read McBain’s 87th Precinct series (which also remains a favourite) I loved the grimy noir feeling of Timlin’s writing, and his maverick protagonist operating outside of the law, and still enjoy the ‘private investigation’ genre for the freedom it gives crime writers to place their characters in more physical and moral danger. Sharman was an exemplar of this, with his fair share of violent encounters , a cynical wit, and his somewhat fluid moral approach to the cases he undertakes. Timlin’s writing style made a big impression for me, and still influences the kind of noir detective/P.I. fiction that I tend to read- real punchy noir. There is also a strong influence of music in his books which has stayed with me, and has led to my love of writers like Doug Johnstone for example who punctuates his books with musical references.

 

 

1990- 1999 Tim O’Brien- The Things They Carried (1990)

My interest in the war genre really started growing up in the naval city of Portsmouth in the 1980’s, where the Falklands conflict was particularly resonant in our consciousness. On the back of this I started to develop an interest in the Vietnam War, as another singularly pointless war, and read books such as Dispatches by Michael Herr and A Rumor Of War by Philip Caputo, and then started looking for fiction, stumbling upon Tim O’Brien, whose books just blew me away, later forming the basis for my MA dissertation. O’Brien’s books based on his own tours in Vietnam, have a layer of sensitivity that underpin his always central theme of the human heart under stress. This book in particular, really emphasises the emotional lives of men in conflict, and the need to hold on to the human connection, be it with their fellow soldiers or those they left behind. He never shirks from the violence and pity of war, but digs down beneath the surface of these soldiers’ lives as they fight to survive, mixing brutal reality with a real sense of poignancy.

 

2000-2009 Don Winslow- The Power Of The Dog (2005)

You know that phrase about never meeting your heroes? Well try writing about them! I absolutely adore Don Winslow’s writing and will only add my still small voice to the overwhelming acclaim that this book has gathered from writers and readers alike. With six years research and being the first instalment of a sweeping trilogy (preceeding The Cartel and The Border) The Power Of The Dog is hands down one of, if not the best, thriller I have ever read. Spanning decades and continents, Winslow’s astute, visceral, authentic, multi-voiced and utterly compelling book focussing on the DEA’S war on drugs, is a masterclass in thriller writing, with no let up of this in the other two books in the trilogy. Rooted in the harsh reality of the international drug trade, with such close adherance to socio-economic and political fact, and peopled with a cast of characters that will anger, enthral or tap your empathy in equal measure, this is an absolute classic.

 

 

2010-2019 Antonin Varenne- Retribution Road (2014)

And the difficulty of this Decades challenge continues trying to pick a standout book from recent years, but this is it. To be quite honest, I could have picked any of Varenne’s books for this as Bed Of Nails, Loser’s Corner, or Equator (the follow up to Retribution Road) are superb too, but Retribution Road it is.  A sprawling 700+ page novel structured in three parts, with a real feeling of a classic quest or odyssey, the book follows Arthur Bowman, a former soldier, an avenging angel and pioneer from conflict in Burma, to Victorian London and finally to the swathes of unconquered territory in America in the grip of the gold rush. A complex and challenging novel it encompasses themes of war, revenge, violence, human connection, religion, compassion and emotional strife, and supported with the beautifully naturalistic writing of landscape (another of my passions) throughout I was just entranced by this. Not an easy read but so, so worth it…

 

 

 

My deepest thanks to Raven for finding time to share her selections. Once again I do feel a degree of guilt over the angst I caused.  But come back in a fortnight when my guest, who will take Decades into the month of May, told me she had found the challenge “EASY” and had no problems making her choices!

As you may have noticed I like to gauge the depth of my reading knowledge by measuring how many of the selections I have previously read.  Raven has left me red-faced this week as I have not read any of her choices but I have since sneakily added two of the five to my TBR.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Louise Fairbairn

Back in January I decided I wanted to build up a library of essential reads as chosen by booklovers. I started with empty shelves and I invite each of my guests to nomainate five books they feel should be added to my Ultimate Library.  There are two rules:

1 – Choose ANY five books
2 – You can only choose one book per decade over five consecutive decades.

Today I am joined by Louise Fairbairn.  Journalist, blogger and frequent chair and contributor to many book events.  Recently Louise helped me prepare for my first appearance in an online event (which still remains secretly under wraps) and her wise council was very much appreciated as the butterflies were taking hold. I am frequently in awe of the diverse range of books she is able to discuss in depth and her assistance with my Decades project was always something I had hoped would happen.

I will hand over to Louise and invite her to introduce herself and her five selections.

DECADES

I’m a freelance production journalist and proofreader, and was the crime fiction reviewer for The Scotsman newspaper for several years. I chair the occasional event, am a Bloody Scotland Book Club panellist, and currently am a judge for New Zealand’s 2021 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best First Novel. I blog about crime fiction as The Girl With All The Crime Books (www.crimebookgirl.com / @crimebookgrrl), and ramble on about other stuff as @scarletrix on Twitter.
I could read before I started school (which didn’t impress the teachers) and since then it’s been a rare day I haven’t read a chapter of something at some point. We didn’t have a lot of books at home when I was young, but there were many well-used library tickets, book tokens often appeared for birthdays, and second-hand bookshops remain something that my family is incapable of walking past without entering, “just for a look”.
Picking just five books was HARD! My “Desert Island Books” are very different to this list, too (Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Peter O’Donnell, Val McDermid and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). But I’ve chosen books I utterly love, and that I think demand to be read in one sitting while your cup of tea goes cold because you are so enthralled.

 

 

1940s

1946 Daphne du Maurier – The King’s General

I had a bit of a Daphne du Maurier binge a couple of years ago, and discovered this gem. She wrote a string of novels (most famously Rebecca) and heaps of short stories (including The Birds and Don’t Look Now), and led a rather peculiar life, if Margaret Forster’s biography is in any way accurate. All her novels are very different, all of them testament to an incredible imagination – and they’re often a bit *odd*. The King’s General is set around the time of the English Civil War, and is a romance with a bit of a mystery, but mostly is an incredible portrait of a woman’s life and the strength she finds when so much is ranged against her. I normally don’t much like historical fiction, and I’m definitely not a fan of romance, but this is just terrific – utterly gripping plot, a fascinating history lesson, and chock-full of emotional intrigues.

 

 

1950s

1955 Alistair MacLean – HMS Ulysses

I wanted to drop in an Alistair MacLean because they’re great action thrillers that sold ridiculous amounts of millions of copies in his lifetime, yet he’s all but forgotten these days and I think he shouldn’t be. But just to be awkward, I’m recommending his debut, HMS Ulysses because it’s not like all the others. As with several of his later novels, it draws on his experiences during the Second World War, but while it’s fiction, it has no need to exaggerate for effect because the experience of the Arctic convoys was so extreme. The thriller plot holds the attention fine, but what sticks in the mind is the battle against the elements as much as the enemy, and the way he evokes the deep-seated fear of the men who went through hell every time they left port. It’s a book that tears at you, but you cannot put it down. Unlike several other titles of his, it made such an emotional impact I’m not in a rush to re-read it, but it’s astonishingly powerful.

 

1960s

1961 Muriel Spark – The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie

I almost went with The Girls Of Slender Means, which I adore, but there’s a reason The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie is so well known and so enduring and it’s not just Maggie Smith’s amazing portrayal in the 1969 film. The novel is only 128 pages long, but it’s absolutely rammed full of plot, character work, evocation of place and some of the sharpest, wittiest, most poignant foreshadowing you’ll ever see in fiction. I studied it at university, and it was among the few books that I enjoyed rather than endured, then have re-read it several times since as it’s just so entertaining and rewarding. Spark was a poet, so stuffing lots of ideas and sensations into a tiny number of sentences was in her nature, but it’s still a masterclass in how much richness you can offer in so few words.

1970s
Ted Lewis – Get Carter (aka Jack’s Return Home)
I’ve been banging on about Ted Lewis for a few years, and it’s entirely Nick Triplow’s fault – I picked up his biogrphy of Lewis when it came out, then saw him do a Q&A at a screening of Get Carter, after which we had a pint and a chat. Thanks to him I’ve been hooked by Get Carter, the novel.  It’s interesting to compare it with the film – the setting is different, being moved form Humberside to Newcastle, but to me the main change is that Michael Caine makes Jack more human than he is in the book.  In Lewis’s novel he’s uncompromising, unwavering and often brutal; in teh film there’s a glimmer of something else behind the cold gaze – in part because of Caine’s film CV rather than anything he does overtly.  Lewis specialised in unlikeable protagonists and grimy, unsettling true noir plots, and while he’s an uneven writer, his best are gripping reads.  Get Carter is perhaps the most accessible; I’d recommend both book and film for any library.  Watch/read with a pint in a thin glass to hand.

 

1980s

1984 William Gibson – Neuromancer

I spent a lot of my teens and 20s reading sci-fi and fantasy, and comics, and still dip into that world now and then (comics is a medium, not a genre, people!), so Neuromancer in part stands for all that. It’s also just a little slice of genius. As with SF authors since forever ago, William Gibson gives us a brave new world extrapolated from and built on the one we live in – plus here he gives us the terms “cyberspace” and “the matrix”, and is credited with creating the archetypal “cyberpunk” novel. Information is thrown at you with no explanation, just go with it and you’ll find it’s a great ride – and something of a crime novel too, if you care to look at it from a certain angle. It’s perhaps dated now, but try and read it in the spirit of 1984 (I first read it circa 1989, hat tip to my pal Neal for pressing it into my hand) and feel its freshness, and the wonder and glee of that first audience. Gibson’s whole oeuvre is worth exploring, he’s a very thoughtful writer who sees the world from interesting angles.
