Decades – Compiling the Ultimate Library with Gordon Brown / Morgan Cry

It’s Decades. My ongoing quest to put together a library which is full of nothing but the very best books – as recommended by booklovers.

Back in January I had no books on the shelves of my Decades Library. Each week a new guest joins me and I ask them to nominate five books they want me to add to the shelves. Books which they feel all libraries should have available to allow them to be discovered by new readers.

Unfortunately for my guests I have made the selection process slightly more tricky than just nominating five books. I wanted to ensure my Decades Library would offer a great range of reading options. Therefore my guests are restricted to only selecting one book per decade from five consecutive decades – any fifty year publication span. I used to get a bit of flack about this second rule but these days it’s much more common for my guests to find clever ways to cheat when making their selections (just scroll down and take a look at Gordon Brown’s first pick).

As a sharp-eyed soul you will have noticed my guest this week is Gordon Brown. Gordon has just announced he will be penning two new books for Red Dog Press. News so fresh it didn’t make it into his introduction! The even sharper eyed reader will see one of these forthcoming books getting a wee mention in the paragraphs below.

 

Gordon Brown has eight crime and thriller books published to date, along with a novella and a number of short stories.

Under his new expat alias, Morgan Cry, Gordon’s latest crime thriller, ’Thirty-One Bones’, set in Spain, is published by Polygon. Available now in both the UK and the U.S. –  the sequel, called ‘Six Wounds’, will be published in in May 2022.

Gordon also helped found Bloody Scotland, Scotland’s International Crime Writing Festival (see www.bloodyscotland.com), is a DJ on local radio (www.pulseonair.co.uk) and runs a strategic planning consultancy. He lives in Scotland and is married with two children.

In a former life Gordon delivered pizzas in Toronto, sold non-alcoholic beer in the Middle East, launched a creativity training business, floated a high tech company on the London Stock Exchange, compered the main stage at a two-day music festival and was once booed by 49,000 people while on the pitch at a major football Cup Final.

 

DECADES

Gordon is compiling the ultimate library and has asked me to contribute five books from five decades. That’s the deal, right? Okay I’ll admit up front that that is a serious challenge. Looking back on my reading am I to choose books that I loved? The one’s that I couldn’t put down. The ones I loathed (that would be a cracking list)? The ones I’ve read more than once? The ones I never finished but have tried time and time again to do so (take a bow ‘Lord of the Rings’). My own books? Fact or fiction? Or both? Do short stories get a look in? Do I ignore the rules and go for books from the same decade? Or do I just forget it all and go for the books that mean the most to me? The booky equivalents of the music albums that return to my turntable time and time again? Not necessarily the best books I’ve ever read. Nor the most technically proficient. Nor those of literary note. Good or bad the following five have one thing in common.

I love them and they fundamentally influenced my writing.

 

1960s – ‘What Happened at Midnight’ by Franklin W. Dixon

This is a Hardy Boys mystery. Okay so this is already a cheat. The book first came out in 1931 but was revised in 1967 (as were many of the books in the series to address issues with racial stereotyping and to make them more action oriented to compete with 60s TV). In addition, there is no such person as Franklin W. Dixon – the name was used to give consistency to the series – the books were written by a wide range of authors. If you want some real geekdom this book was originally penned by Leslie McFarlane and then re-written by Tom Mulvey. To add to my ‘cheatness’ quotient this is probably not my favourite Hardy Boys book – but it is the one that got me into reading in a big way. All Hardy Boys books rely on a simple premise. Two young adults, Frank (18) (16 in earlier books) and Joe (17) (15 in earlier books), whose father is a police detective, solve the criminal mystery each time. Later in the series they help their dad with his cases but in earlier books they fly solo. ‘What Happened at Midnight’ is centred on a new type of transistor that the boys are asked to steal (by dad) and keep safe. The plot involves smugglers, bi-planes and chases. That’s all you need to know on that front. What marks this out for me was the fact I read the whole thing in one afternoon. And then raided my local library for every other Hardy Boys book I could get my hands on. These books imbued me with a desire to write and to add mustard to this weird sandwich I’ve just put a Glasgow ‘Hardy Boys’ book set in 1973 out on submission.

 

1970s – ‘Nightmare Blue’ by Gardner Dozois and George Alex Effinger

The story of an alien race who land, planning to take over earth, bringing with them a drug that is instantly addictive. One shot and you’ll die, if you don’t keep taking it. The aliens target world leaders along with the great and the good, forcing them to take the drug. Riding to humanity’s rescue is a German private investigator who teams up with a multi-limbed alien slave to rid the planet of this evil threat. Go on tell me you don’t want to read it – I have, at least half a dozen times, maybe more. I have never been able to put my finger on why this book hooks me. It’s not famous, nor is it notorious. It’s not the best written book. Nor is it without its flaws. I’ve only met one other person who has read it and they thought it was ‘okay’ – given I’d put them on to it this was a better reaction than I thought they would have. I’m convinced that the drug that is so central to the story had somehow been infused into the pages of my copy and that’s why I need a regular fix. It still resonates with me to this day. A book populated with outsiders, misfits, underdogs fighting the odds, battling the baddies. Individuals thrown into situations that they are ill prepared for. Both those sentences could sum up every book I’ve written. That’s how influential this book is to me.

 

1980s – ‘Christine’ by Stephen King

 The start of my ‘on/off’ love affair with Mr King. This takes me back to the summer of 1983 when I was working in a bar on the shores of Loch Lomond. The hours were long, the customers demanding and time off limited. When things were quiet we were allowed to read a book. My problem was that once I started Christine I could be found reading in the back cellar when things were the polar opposite of quiet. This is a story set in Libertyville, Pennsylvania in 1978 where two school friends, Arnie and Dennis, stumble upon a wreck of a car, a 1958 Plymouth Fury. Owned by a miserable old git called Roland D. LeBay, he agrees to sell the car to the boys for $250. Only the car isn’t quite what it seems (is any inanimate object in a King novel?). Arnie becomes obsessed with the car and works on it to bring it back to its former glory. When the car starts killing people (of its own volition) poor Arnie is in the frame with the local detective. This was considered King’s first return to a fully-fledged supernatural horror novel since the The Shining but to me the book is wonderful a tale of small-town America. Of a relationship between an old man and a young boy and what true obsession can do to a person and those around them. It’s all about the characters – and that sticks with me in my own writing. Oh, and it does feature a haunted car. A theme he came back to in my favourite King book ‘From a Buick 8’.

 

1990s – ‘A Man in Full’ by Tom Wolfe

The opposite of a rags to riches story in every way possible. Take a man who has everything and is stretching for even more and then we watch as it all unravels. Set in high society Atlanta and told from various points of views this was Tom Wolfe’s second novel, eleven years after the monster that was ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’. I love the set pieces in this book. I borrowed the idea of naming each chapter for my own books from this work. My favourite being ‘The Saddlebags’ – a ‘breakfast’ meeting where Charlie Croker meets with his bankers, believing that, despite the problems his new vanity project is facing, he is set fair to make more money. Only to discover that the people in the room are no longer friends but Rottweilers – out to disabuse him of the notion that he is in control. The Saddlebags refers to the sweat stains that start under Charlie’s armpits as he realises how much trouble he is in. As the meeting goes south and the bankers set upon him, the stains spread across Charlie’s shirt and when they meet in the middle of his chest the cry of ‘Saddlebags’ goes up and the Charlie is sunk and the bankers own him. A story of greed, excess, entitlement and written in a way that I aspire to.

 

2000s – ‘Why Don’t Penguins Feet Freeze’ – The New Scientist

In the New Scientist magazine there is a column called ‘The Last Word’. People write in with questions and scientists (and others) write in with answers. Often disagreeing with each other. Back in 2005 New Scientist decided to take the correspondence from over the years and bundle it into a book. The first book being ‘Does Anything Eat Wasps’. As the title of the books suggest the questions are anything but ordinary – take the other books in this series ‘Do Polar Bears Get Lonely?’, ‘Why Can’t Elephants Jump?’, ‘Why Are Orangutans Orange?’ and ‘Will We Ever Speak Dolphin?’ and you get the idea. Each book has a hundred odd questions loosely ordered by subject matter. And the beauty is that few questions have a definitive answer. ‘Why Don’t Penguins Feet Freeze’ got me into what I call my ‘chewing gum for the mind’ books. I always have one on the go. At the moment it’s the ‘QI Book of the Dead’. They are my ‘escape’ books. As leftfield from crime and thrillers as I can get. Birthdays and Christmases refill my ‘nonsense’ larder as my wife and kids buy me a never-ending supply. I’m looking at one of my book shelves and can see books entitled – ‘How Much Poo Does An Elephant Do’, ‘Usefully Useless – Everything You Didn’t Learn at School’, ‘How To Live Forever and 34 Other Really Interesting Uses of Science’, ‘The World’s Greatest Mistakes’, ‘Why Does E=MC2?’, ‘Elephants on Acid and Other Bizarre Experiments’ (What is it about elephants?), ‘Go Figure – Things you Didn’t Know You Didn’t Know’, ‘The Worst Case Scenario Handbook’ – and so on. But, in truth, these books, apart from allowing me to lose myself, are simply the dogs bollocks for providing the grist for my creative writing mill.

 

I would never have expected Why Don’t Penguins Feet Freeze? to make its way into my Decades Library but it’s a book I also loved to read. My wife and I both read our way through all the books The New Scientist released – me for the quirky questions and her for the “sciency bits”.

The non-fiction shelves of my Library are not as busy as the fiction ones at this time. Perhaps in future more non-fiction books will make their way through the doors and into the Decades Library?  The only way to find out is to keep reading.

Murder at the Bailey – Henry Milner

A notorious loan shark is shot dead, in broad daylight, right outside the front doors of the Old Bailey. I want to read books which are fun, the escapism, engaging characters and a damn good story to hold my attention. Essentially I want to read books like Murder at the Bailey.

A clever, witty and fascinating “romp” through the English justice system as a high profile murder case runs through the courts. But this is no domestic drama to be played out under the radar, the deceased was a gangster – a notorious loan shark who evaded all all attempts to imprison him by putting the frighteners on any prosecution witnesses. He always and walked free from court to the frustration of the police.

But at the start of our story the loan shark doesn’t walk far. As he leaves the courtroom following his latest “not guilty” verdict a man dressed in court garb confronts him on the court steps and shoots him. Twice.

The shooter is arrested and makes a full confession to the police. Then he calls for one of the top defence lawyers and the process of defending him in court begins.

As readers we are treated to the best seats in the house as we follow all the players in this engaging courtroom drama. The judge who has problems at home, the defence lawyer who is bored and seeking a challenge, the arresting policeman who wants one last big conviction before retirement and badly wants to put the defence lawyer in his place. Then there is the gangster who is delighted to see the loanshark dead and wants to help (anonymously) the accused go free. Naturally the gangster has “contacts” so he tries to ensure he knows what’s happening with the jury…it goes on.

All these characters are masterfully depicted. With so many larger than life egos bustling to command the spotlight there could have been a problem ensuring they get the attention they deserve but this just doesn’t happen. When the stakes are this high there is plenty of room for everyone to shine – fantastic control shown by Henry Milner in keeping his characters firmly in their place.

I cannot recommend this book more highly. Smart courtroom powerplays, acerbic wit, duplicity everywhere you turn and at the heart a killer who wants you to believe he had no other choice but to eliminate a bad man before he was a victim himself. Kill or be killed?

If you enjoy a courtroom thriller you will be hard pressed to find one quite like Murder at the Bailey. I absolutely loved it.

The Dark Hours – Michael Connelly

AS NIGHT FALLS, A KILLER COMES TO LIGHT…

A Ballard and Bosch thriller but The Dark Hours is very much the book in which Renée Ballard gets to shine. I can’t immediately think of a scene in the book where Ballard doesn’t feature and she is a formidable force throughout. Bosch fans need not worry as Harry does get plenty of involvement but this is all about Ballard.

Proceedings open on New Years Eve when all the cops are on the streets for a “time-honoured” tradition of LA residents shooting their guns into the air (and I thought we Scot’s were hardcore revellers on Hogmanay). A call comes through for Ballard – a death to attend after the rain of bullets had fallen on the city.

Although Ballard is not working homicide cases and has been seconded to Sex to assist with a case the police are calling The Midnight Men she attends the scene and has suspicions this death may actually be a murder. Although Ballard should be handing over the case to the detectives that work homicides they are too busy with an “all hands onboard” case which has potential to be high profile and damaging for the reputation of LAPD.  Ballard starts to investigate her suspected murder and opens a can of worms.

The murder weapon appears to link to an unsolved murder several years ago, the investigating detective was Harry Bosch.  The pair are reunited and Ballard drafts in Bosch to assist so she can try to track a killer before she is told to hand over the case to the homicide detectives. As she starts asking questions she draws attention to herself, there have been other murders down the years and Ballard’s victim is just the latest person who fell foul of a ruthless collective. But with the department seemingly reluctant to lift the lid on historic murders which may make LAPD look bad she is fighting a losing battle to progress her enquiries.

Ballard’s frustration with the politics of policing is very clear in The Dark Hours. Michael Connelly has made his latest novel very relevant to today’s circumstances.  He is one of the few authors making lockdown and Covid very much part of the ongoing narrative. There are mentions of George Floyd and the January 6th issues in the Americal capital. Ballard has seen the public perception towards the police shifting and it doesn’t help her doing her job. This brings a fascinating new dynamic to a police story which the author exploits to magnificent effect.

I referenced The Midnight Men – a dual team of predators who have been conducting violent sexual assults on women. Ballard is officially working this case but is saddled with a colleague who Ballard feels has lost her drive and empathy. These scenes in the story will be disturbing and Ballard’s determination to see justice served will drive her to making some questionable decisions to see the perpreatrators caught. Is the result more important than following procedure? Ballard thinks so but she will still need to answer for her actions.

The Dark Hours is easily one of my favourite reads this year. The story feels frantic and unrelenting. Ballard is spinning plates and burning the candle both ends and the reader is caught up with her determination to make good and help the victims in all the crimes she has to investigte. But hunting the worst people makes her a target and Ballard will need to be very careful as not all threats are physical, political pressures may also stop her achieving her goals.

I don’t know how Michael Connelly can consistently deliver such compelling stories but I am in awe that the does.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with S.G. MacLean

It is time to catch up with my Decades Library again. This week the Decades Curator Hat is passed to Shona MacLean who has selected five new books that she wants me to add to my ever-growing collection of umissable reads.

When making nominations for the books I must add to my Decades Library my guests cannot just pick their five favourite books. I ask them to follow two simple rules:

1 – You can select ANY five books
2 – When making selections you can only select one book per decade from five consecutive decades – this means choices can come from any fifty year span.

Flexing of the rules and name-checking books which narrowly missed out seems to be fairly common practice and Shona has thrown subtlety to the wind to give some nice bonus mentions.

Time for me to step back and let Shona take you through her selections.

 

S.G. MacLean (Shona) was born in Inverness and grew up in various small Highland villages where her parents were hoteliers. One of five children, she learned to appreciate the virtues of peace and quiet and taking to her room with a good book at a young age. Her own nest of 4 children is about be emptied, which will leave more time to concentrate on the world’s neediest dog. After an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Aberdeen University, she began writing historical crime novels while the children were bringing themselves up.

She currently has two series in print – The 4 book Alexander Seaton series, set mainly in the 1620s and 30s in the north-east of Scotland, and the 5 book Damian Seeker series, set mainly in the 1650s England of Oliver Cromwell. Her first book, The Redemption of Alexander Seaton (2008) was longlisted for the Desmond Elliot award and shortlisted for the Saltire 1st Book award and the CWA Historical Dagger. All of the Seeker books have either been longlisted or shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger, 2 of them – The Seeker and Destroying Angel winning it, and two – The Bear Pit and The House of Lamentations also being longlisted for the Gold Dagger. The Bear Pit was also shortlisted for the Blairgowrie Festival Book of the Year award in 2020.

Amongst the framed photos on Shona’s bookshelves are two of her late uncle, bestselling novelist Alistair MacLean, who looks over her shoulder with a wry smile.

DECADES

Okay, here are my choices. This was extremely difficult because some of my favourite and most influential books were published centuries apart, and others crowding into the same decade. Anyway, I may sneak a couple of them in in the subtext. (There will be asterisks, thus: *). The one book I was absolutely determined to get in was published in the 2000s, so I’ve built my list around that, stretching back from there to the decade in which I was born (1960s). All of these books are high quality reads and well worth a place on the shelves.

So:

1960s: Ellis Peters, A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs

 

What can I say about Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael Chronicles? I first discovered them in my late teens ad I couldn’t believe there were books which combined two of my greatest reading pleasures – History and Crime Fiction. I loved that canny, all-too-human Welsh monk and his wonderfully-recreated C12th world. I still listen to the radio programmes starring the inimitable Derek Jacobi. Ellis Peters was for me the absolute trailblazer of my genre. You’re supposed to pretend you don’t mind about winning awards, but when I started writing, it was my dream to one day win the Dagger that had first been instituted in her honour.

 

 

1970s: Reginald Hill, A Clubbable Woman.

Oh, Dalziel and Pascoe – mismatched, again thoroughly human, and brilliant. These books are so well-written, so intricate and intelligent, such consistent page-turners. But I would be lying if I said I’d read the books first. I saw the TV show first – was there ever anyone as magnificently right in a role as Warren Clarke? (although my friend Fiona, who urged me to read the books, assured me he was not disgusting enough). To me, Andy Dalziel has at last found his heir in Mick Herron’s Jackson Lamb.* quietly sneaking in another favourite. In my first year at Harrogate, I was introduced to Reginald Hill. I could hardly believe it, and had nothing remotely sensible to say to him. What a lovely gentleman he was.

 

 

 

1980s: Ian Rankin, Knots and Crosses

I think Tartan Noir is a lazy term, and does none of us any favours, apart from to allow for a comforting kind of kinship when Scottish crime-writers find themselves away from home. Having said that, for me, Ian Rankin broke a mould I hadn’t known existed; several moulds, in fact. Here was well-written, intelligent crime fiction set in Scotland (I’d somehow missed Macillvanney as a crime writer, but happily got him the next time around, and again was lucky enough to meet him at my first Bloody Scotland. “Hello, I’m Willie,” he said, as I tried not to pass out.  Another absolute old school gent.) Rankin’s ‘place’ – Edinburgh, and his character John Rebus, breathed reality, breathed authenticity, and were absolutely engaging for it. With no disrespect intended to any predecessors whose work I might have missed, I have the sense that from then on, Scottish crime writing began to build, to be taken seriously, and for that many of us need to be grateful.

 

 

 

1990s: Ali Smith, Like

Oh, do I love Ali Smith! Oh did I go up to her at Ness Book Fest a few years ago and completely fan girl and burble at her about how much I loved her writing and how much it meant to me, and how of all her work it was Public Library and Other Stories that meant the most to me, because it reminded me of my childhood, and our village library in Muir of Ord, and my Dad and all sorts of things? And she told me that her first novel, Like, was the most her, the most about growing up in Inverness. And so I bought it and I read it and I loved her even more. Which is why my choice for the 1990s isn’t, after all, James Kelman and How Late it was, how Late. * see what I did there?

 

 

 

2000s: James Robertson, The Testament of Gideon Mack

Practically any one of James Robertson’s books is the kind of book that makes me think I should give up writing, because I have not a hope of coming anywhere near him as a writer. His ear for dialogue, for the Scots tongue, is perfect. His characters, at times, are the heirs of the finest characters in Walter Scott; Baillie Nicol Jarvie would not find himself out of place in a James Robertson novel. The Testament of Gideon Mack being longlisted for the Booker Prize brought this brilliant writer to greater prominence.  I think had the judges understood Scottish literature better, had they read Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner* or Stevenson’s Master of Ballantrae*, then Robertson, with this deep, C21st century dive into the Scottish psyche, would not have stopped at the longlist. I stalked him out of an event at Ullapool once, and thrust the book at him to be signed. We are both on the programme for the Blairgowrie festival in a few weeks time, so I fervently hope he has forgotten this.

 

 

 

Five wonderful books which I am thrilled to add to my Decades Library. I also read the Cadfael novels in my late teens and Dalziel and Pascoe were not far behind. As I worked in the largest bookshop in the Highlands at the time Shona was reading her way through the Ellis Peters books I would like to believe there is a possibility I may have sold her some of the books which helped influence these Decades choices.

Also Muir of Ord Library was MY library when I was a teenager – how lovely to have it remembered all these years later. I can still remember the smell of books which hit you as you pushed open the library door.

When you grow up reading books set in schools and featuring school kids you don’t realise schools feature less and less in your chosen reads as you move away from MG, YA and into (in my case) crime and thriller fiction. So when I started Have You Seen Me – a crime thriller set in a residential school I was transported back to a period of my life where schools were the staple location for the books I read.

Have You Seen Me is a YA thriller which is aimed at readers aged 12 to 17 and I would absoultely have been here for this book at that time of my life. It has a group of school friends who have concerns the adults responsible for their care are not listening to their worries that something has happened to a girl in their class.

At Waverly Prep missing girls seem to be something of a recurring issue. The staff at the school believe the missing girls simply ran away, they were disruptive troublemakers and they didn’t seem to want to be at this illustrious institution. Aubrey Leroux was a student at Waverly Prep and girls in her year went missing. She suspected foul play at the time but she didn’t know she had been a suspect too.

Aubrey had been a scholarship student and there would have been no way that her family could have afforded to send her to Waverly Prep were it not for her academic prowess winning her a place. Naturally this singled Aubrey out amongst her peers at the time, the fact she was dark skinned in a school with mainly white rich kids was also a situation she endured.  Now Aubrey returns to her old school to take up a teaching post. Her new boss, her old headteacher, remembers she brought attitude and problems with her so Aubrey is already striving to make a good impression in her new role.

It’s not the best start for her though – as when she was a student – a girl has gone missing from Waverly Prep and Aubrey feels there have been too many instances of missing kids for it to be a coincidence. She believes there is a danger in the school and she wants to investigate. But the local police don’t support Aubrey’s suspicions so it falls to Aubrey and a group of her students to conduct their own enquries.

The missing girl is Lindsey Gillett. Her classmates hail her as a popular student but this isn’t mirrored by the staff opinion of her. Aubrey starts to look further into Lindsey’s time at the school and with her student investigators they start to ask tricky questions. The old groundskeeper remembers Aubrey from her time as a student but he warns her off looking too much into the background of the school and the large grounds it sits in, particularly the old battlefield and graveyard.

Of course the more the students and Aubrey snoop the more likely they are to draw unwanted attention and soon a missing girl is the least of their worries as one of their number meets a nasty end. There’s a murderer hanging around the school and it doesn’t look like he is going to settle for just a single victim.

As this is a YA novel the more brutal detail of the murder scenes are not shared with the reader – that’s all down to your imagination. But the manner of the deaths and the set-up to a catastrophe is still rather disconcerting at times. I liked the imagination Alexandra Weis brought to the second half of the story when the danger is ramped up to the max. But it was a bit of a slow burn initially and I found the students and their manipulation of their teacher to be irksome rather than engaging – I am putting that down to my age though!

All in I enjoyed Have You Seen Me. It was darker than I had expected but not in a graphic way. A couple of twists were a little too easy to spot but the exectuion of the story was still well handled. Stick with it through the build up for a full on last third where virtually anything goes.

Decades: Compiling the Ultimate Library with Eamonn Griffin

Back in January I began my Decades challenge. I imagined the dilemma I would face if I was a librarian and was presented with a brand new library but there were absolutely no books on the shelves. Which books would I pick to add to my library if I wanted it to be representative of the very best books which had been published?

I realised I couldn’t possibly pick all the books so each week I have been inviting guests to join me and I have asked them to select the books they believe I should add to my Decades Library.

Why is it a Decades Library?  Well that’s because I ask my guests to follow two rules when they nominate books

1 – Select ANY five books

2 – You can only choose one book per decade from any five consecutive decades

 

This week it is my pleasure to welcome Eamonn Griffin to Grab This Book. Eamonn has picked five wonderful selections and I say this because he has chosen my favourite mix of titles. A couple which I immediately recognise (he has picked one of my favourites) and then some entirely unexpected books which sound utterly fascinating and he makes me want to read them.

Enough from me though – shall we get to these brilliant reading recommendations?  I will get the books added to the Library, you can  enjoy Eamonn’s choices and consider which five books you would choose.

 

Eamonn Griffin lives in North Wales. He writes stuff, sometimes for money. His most recent book is East of England (Unbound, 2019), a revenge noir set in 1980s Lincolnshire. Sequels featuring protagonist Dan Matlock have long been threatened, and may yet emerge.

Other books by Eamonn include The Prospect of this City (set at the outset of the Great Fire of London), Torc (a timeslip novel set both in contemporary and in Roman-era Wester Ross in Scotland), Juggernaut (a direct sequel to RL Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) and Benches of Louth, a personal geography of the Lincolnshire market town in which he grew up.

DECADES

 

1960s: Elidor, by Alan Garner (Collins, 1965)

I could have chosen any of Garner’s grounded fantasies, as they’re uniformly excellent and properly weird. This is in part becuase they each meld folk traditions, ordinary lives, and relationships between place and person. While Red Shift is another favourite, I’ve gone for Elidor. This is because the fantastic elements are secured in an everyday context – a wet, drab 60s Manchester where the most fun the children at the centre of the drama can come up with is riding the lifts in John Lewis – and because at the same time there’s engagement with all manner of Celtic myth and legend while exploring the consequences of poor decision-making. This is a book I read loads of times growing up: I should really go back to it again.

 

 

 

1970s: Religion and the Decline of Magic, by Keith Thomas (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1971)

While its value as a history book has lessened over time because of advances in the field, new writings, and changed perspectives, Keith Thomas’s book is nevertheless a terrific entry point for anyone with an interest in the seventeenth century. The focus is on exploring how and why the British Isles shifted from faith to secularity in a century. That’s a bit of an over-simplification, but the ways in which Thomas brings together a huge array of sources into a single accessible narrative that’s impressive, stimulating, and clear are great. Also, the book’s loads of fun: it’s an immersion in religion, folk beliefs, hedge magic, and superstition while also illustrating ways in which the contexts of your life inform its nature and experience. If you’re interested in this sort of thing – and why wouldn’t you be? – then Michael Hunter’s 2020 The Decline of Magic: Britain in the Enlightenment is a very useful updating / revision / riposte to Thomas’s work.

 

 

1980s: The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco (Pan Books, 1984)

My favourite novel of all time to date. Simple as that. The Name of the Rose is the book equivalent of something like Scorsese’s GoodFellas: it does everything with brio and panache. Storywise, it’s straightforward: a monk and his apprentice are commissioned to investigate a series of murders in an abbey which both threaten an upcoming religious debate, and which also may be a portent of the end times. The book riffs on Sherlock Holmes, on medieval philosophy, on sign systems, on maze design, on the influence of Jorge Luis Borges, and on the importance of books, as well as on the folly of locking knowledge away. Ah, plus it’s a love story, a superb depiction of friendship, and a deathbed confession.

 

 

 

1990s: Nymphomation, by Jeff Noon (Doubleday, 1997)

Nymphomation acts as a prequel to Noon’s earlier novels Vurt, Pollen and Automated Alice, and is also a terrific National Lottery satire. Set in a near-future Manchester, the book not only sets up the universe in which the later books are set, but works brilliantly as a stand-alone novel. It does that thing that good SF can do so well: give you a new perspective on the present. It’s perhaps not easy to recall what a big thing the National Lottery was in the UK when it began in the mid-90s: Nymphomation gets right to the heart of that, while exploring the prboems inherent in any system designed to extract money from ordinary people for the benefit of those already-rich, while promising a better future as a distraction from the bleakness of the everyday.

 

 

 

2000s: Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel (Fourth Estate, 2009)

Mantel’s three-novel sequence charting the rise and fall of Henry VIII’s consiligere Thomas Cromwell is the great achievement of contemporary British fiction, historical or otherwise. It’s that good. If I’d had another decade to play with, I’d have picked the second book – Bring Up The Bodies – over this first novel (and I’d have popped Cormac McCarthy’s No Country For Old Men into this slot) but Wolf Hall is great in its own right, plus sets up themes and tensions that pay off over the next two books, so it more than earns its place here.

Mantel’s gift is in getting convincingly inside Cromwell, so we experience first-hand what it feels like to rise towards power, and to have to work in situations where you’re constantly being judged by your background. As a treatise on office politics it’s great, and as a detailed depiction of what court life might have been like for those serving a capricious king, it’s unparalleled. Wolf Hall deals with Cromwell’s finding favour and his working to secure the Boleyn marriage: Bring Up The Bodies addresses the collapse of that union, and Cromwell’s dedication to purging the Boleyn influence from court. Part three – The Mirror and the Light – details the crumbling of Cromwell’s place, and his struggling with the inevitability of the axe.

 

Anyway, these are my choices for the library. Another day, and each might well have been different!

I’ve always enjoyed the Simon Kernick books I have read in the past, his name on a book is an early guarantee of a cracking read. I finished Good Cop Bad Cop last night and it has immediately become my favourite of all the Simon Kernick novels. What a rush this book was!

Chris Sketty is a cop. When his story begins in Good Cop Bad Cop he is recently single after splitting with his wife following the death of their young daughter. Sketty has his work and not much more so he throws himself into his job. But Sketty is young and headstrong and he also struggles to control his temper and exercise caution when the red mist descends.

This lack of control is evidenced when he uses excessive force to bring down and subdue a suspect in a domestic abuse incident. Sketty’s prospects look bleak as the investigation into his use of force looks likely to rule he over-reacted which would mean expulsion from the force.

Then comes a chance at salvation. Sketty is invited to go undercover as there is suspicion an officer in another division is part of a secretive criminal gang with wide ranging influence and a remorseless, ruthless destruction agenda. Sketty is to try and get close to the suspect and bring down the network. To Sketty it seems the perfect opportunity to redeem himself but it turns out to be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Or does it?

Good Cop Bad Cop sees Sketty recounting where his life went wrong. This discussion takes place years after he was asked to go undercover and he is speaking with the widower of a murdered woman who died during a terror incident during which Sketty was himself injured but emerged as a hero for killing some of the instigators.

There is a suspicion Sketty is not the hero he is made out to be and that he got too deep in his undercover role and turned criminal – responsible for countless deaths and horrific violence. Truth will out but who can you trust?

I inhaled Good Cop Bad Cop. Simon Kernick does a magnificent job of blurring the lines around Sketty’s actions and I struggled to convince myself if Sketty was an evil operator or just desperately unlucky and cursed with making poor choices.

This is a book laden with excitement, thrills and tension. By the end you have lived Sketty’s life with him and you will have decided if he is indeed a Good Cop or perhaps a Bad Cop. But I don’t think we will all reach the same conclusion.

This is a must read book for any thriller fan.

Heather Martin and The Reacher Guy

For the first time in a very long time I am delighted to be able to share an interview here at Grab This Book.

Heather Martin is author of The Reacher Guy: The Authorised Biography of Lee Child.  I reviewed the audiobook of The Reacher Guy (here) and found it to be an engrossing account of an author I have read for years; but actually knew very little about. As TRG has recently released in paperback I was delighted when Heather agreed to chat with me about writing Lee’s biography and I finally got to satisfy my curiosity about how she got accurate answers out of a natural storyteller.

 

Before you met Lee Child and discussed writing about his life I am assuming there was an earlier moment where Jack Reacher first crossed your path. Where did your personal “Lee Child” journey begin? 

They say you remember your first time, but I don’t really. I was in Cambridge. It must have been about ten years before I met Lee Child – One Shot, perhaps, which came out in 2005, so before his first New York Times no. 1 in 2008, before he became a household name, but around the time Tom Cruise signed on and things started getting huge. But one thing’s for sure: Reacher turned up just when I needed him. Doesn’t he always? What’s weird is he kept coming back, not like in book world – twenty-four times I think it was. But I was OK with that. And I do remember where it all started – in the bedroom. I pulled a book off the shelf and hopped into bed and well, let’s just say I didn’t sleep much that night.  

I should add that during this period of innocence the name ‘Lee Child’ meant nothing more to me than the guarantee of a good read. 

 

I had somehow imagined you would have been there from the start. Reacher is one of the few series which I caught early. I was there from Killing Floor and utterly hooked. How I wish I had kept my original copies of the early books (and my Star Wars collection too).  

So, if 2005 was when you first encountered Reacher and it was ten years before you met Lee, where did you finally get to meet the man himself?  

I wish you had too! The thing about the Reacher books is they’re equally addictive no matter where you jump in. The damage is done on page one. Another confession: I wasn’t one who waited on the release date, not at least until I met Lee, and then only because I was curious about the man. But he would never have allowed me to write the biography had I been a classic superfan – it’s in his nature to prefer a degree of scepticism.  

We met over dinner at the old Union Square Café on Manhattan’s East 16th St in the summer of 2015. There were seven of us in total. Lee arrived last and folded himself into the last remaining chair, on my left. He was a little cramped. He surveyed the general scene and said: ‘you should have mentioned my name and we would have got the best table in the house’. Nevertheless we soldiered on. He’d been to the dentist that day and was feeling a little delicate; he drank champagne and had profiteroles for dessert. He lamented the loss of the Labour Party’s original clause IV. Afterwards, one of our group, a brilliant young woman who worked as a parliamentary assistant to Harriet Harman, said she wished he would run for leadership of the party.  

A lucky escape for Lee then as if he HAD run for parliament his popularity would have taken an overnight hammering.  

Was that the dinner where the prospect of writing Lee’s biography was first discussed? How do you get from “pass the breadsticks” to “can I write about your life?”  

And because I am curious – did you know Lee would be there before the meal? Either way I have always thought it to be very cool. 

He was wise to that risk I’m sure. Later he said that if he was made king of the world the first thing he’d do would be abdicate – too much responsibility.   

No mention of biographies, but we got on well and no doubt the seed was sown. We’d already had some correspondence about the Spanish translation of one of his later novels, which I’d critiqued at his request. So yes, I knew he would be there. Our conversation had already begun. After The Reacher Guy was published, Lee told an interviewer for BBC Radio Sheffield it was my commentary on that translation that made him take me seriously as a prospective biographer, because he felt I understood what mattered to him in his writing, what was important. And because I wasn’t afraid to say what I thought. By that point in his career that perhaps wasn’t so common.  

It seems you had established a good relationship with Lee before the biography gained traction. Obviously there came a point where you agreed you would write about his life? I am keen to know where you went from that​ conversation, where do you start?  

Yes, we were already friends. I first heard him speak publicly in 2016 in Cambridge, at the Literary Festival, then Oxford, at the St Hilda’s Crime Conference, in what he affectionately refers to as his ‘establishment year’, when he was also in demand as an essayist from the New Yorker and the New York Times. That was the year in which he was first picked up by the London Review of Books and the TLS. As you know, he’s an enthralling speaker, as good at spinning a historical tale as a thriller. Presumably it was the academic in me, but I found myself taking notes.  

I made the effort to catch up with Lee at festivals and then committed to a couple of short stays in New York so I would have more opportunity to work through my seemingly endless questions. As I’ve said before, the biography arose organically out of a long conversation, and there came a point where we both agreed we thought we could make it work. In between times I covered the obvious bases: I visited the places where he’d lived and worked; I tracked down old friends, teachers and colleagues; I reread all the books, and trawled through the mostly very similar interviews online and on paper, sifting through the evidence and trying gently to separate the man from his persona. Eventually I got access to the archive, which Lee donated to the British Archive for Contemporary Writing at the University of East Anglia in 2018, in advance of his semi-planned retirement. I had most of the first draft done by then, but I think that turned out well for me, because it meant I knew what I was looking for, but also that when I stumbled across something I didn’t know I was looking for it tended to jump out and grab my attention. I loved those weeks, altogether months in the archive – so absorbing, so revealing, both tranquil and exciting.  

Lee is certainly an engaging speaker so I can imagine listening to him at numerous events must have been fascinating. But if he was also promoting the latest book then possibly some repetition would creep in? 

That thought leads me towards something I had wondered about as I read TRG. You often reference his habit of adapting or elaborating on facts. It seemed there was Lee’s version of events and everyone else’s version. Did you see anecdotes being told and tweaked at different events and how does that impact upon a biographer who is trying to nail down facts? 

And that was a highlight of reading TRG, at times you almost sounded vexed with his recounting of events which others would “amend”. 

Such a good question. The repetition itself was interesting, of course. What made him return to those same themes, what made him reach for the same stories? Did it come from within or without? The reasons are many. Some of it was reactive, and over time, as an essentially shy man, he perfected his public persona. But he also refined his thinking around those topics that preoccupy him most deeply: the nature and purpose of fiction, the nature of humanity (which has no purpose), the transaction between reader and writer. I believe he enjoyed that learning process, which is what makes him such a compelling essayist.   

Where you have repetition, variation is also built in. Some of that repetition was willed, some of it unconscious. To an extent it was pragmatic, his performance tailored to suit the time slot allocated, a skill he’d acquired during his years at Granada Television. If he was talking about the distant past – his early childhood, for instance – then by definition he was dealing in stories that had been handed down by parents and grandparents; if he was talking about the present, there was the Reacher brand – and publisher expectation – to consider. Lee was relaxed about it. Nothing he said ever seemed to him contradictory; his brain could reconcile all the angles. He sees all writing as storytelling, and storytelling as among the most ancient of human habits, long preceding the advent of writing, and in tracing the evolution of fiction homes in on the way writers adapt humanity’s best-loved stories to the needs and desires of new audiences. I think this is one of the main reasons he’s a one-draft writer: that’s just how he told the archetypal story that year – he couldn’t go back and change it.  

For the biographer it’s all grist to the mill. Sometimes I would quiz him about the discrepancies between his recollections and those of others. But rather than being daunted by the vagaries of point of view and memory – which I increasingly acknowledged as a condition of the enterprise – I found them liberating. Both Lee and I were aiming for a truthful account, but we both knew it could only ever be an approximation, so then it became more about authenticity, on both sides. I never saw it as my job to pin him down in the manner of a lepidopterist. I don’t like sticking pins in things. I always expected him to elude me, just as Reacher always eludes the reader in the end, and each of us eludes the other. I hope this is something I managed to bring out in the biography, in the later chapters especially, but also in those on the mother figure, and death. 

I would like to pull you back to the writing process and how you took on the challenge of capturing a lifetime. It sounds like you had several conversations with Lee and you hit the books and the archives. Did you tackle your research chronologically and try to work from his childhood or perhaps you worked back from when the books were releasing (when I imagine information became more plentiful)? 

One thing which did strike me – in the early part of the book he is Jim/James but by the end he is very much Lee. You tell two stories. Is he Jim or Lee to you now? 

Many conversations, over years, and a long correspondence too. My approach was less chronological than thematic, and intuitive. Lee would say things; questions would lead to more questions. He told me about his grandparents, and on the Irish side that led back to his great-grandparents. There’d be an anecdote about his father, then gradually we’d fill in the bigger picture. It took longer to get him to talk about his mother. And I only really made significant progress on the school, university and Granada years, when I was able to go back to him with the memories of others. There was a vast amount of information in circulation about his career, a lot of it misleading or erroneous. What I found hardest to work with, ironically, were Lee’s own introductions to special editions of his books: it was difficult to shake off his words.  

When it came to the writing, I tried not to contemplate the enormity of the task, or indeed the temerity. I simply started at the beginning, relying on a particular image, moment, concept or theme to steer me through. Amazingly, it seemed to work, and I grew to trust my own instincts. I liked the idea of each chapter being a self-contained story, which I thought might suit the reader too.  

Lee would always say to me, and to others, ‘a book has to have a beating heart’. So while I approached the subject with due seriousness, it was mostly, in the end, a feeling thing.  

His books were always there and so too his fame. Which I suppose is the beginning of an answer to your second question. I met Lee as Lee, and he’ll always be Lee to me. But it was Jack Reacher I got to know first, so he was there from the start. Jim Grant was the one I knew nothing about. I barely even knew he existed. But what I discovered as I got to know Jim Grant, which I did, to the point where I was comfortable referring to Lee by his given name as necessary and appropriate, was that Reacher had been there from the start for him as well. Not named, not explicitly formulated, but as the archetypal fictional hero, a source of comfort and hope in a miserable childhood, and a fantasy alter ego too. Reacher saved Jim, thanks to Lee Child.  

That’s quite a thought, that before we got to read about Margrave in Killing Floor Reacher had already saved Jim Grant. A ripple effect though, the stone had hit the loch but the ripples would take some time to reach the shore (and Jim/Lee’s future would be secured). 
So we know Reacher’s story as Lee has told us that. And we know Jim and Lee’s story thanks to The Reacher Guy. What about Heather Martin? We are long overdue an introduction.
Well, there’s a reason we’re talking about Lee Child and Jack Reacher, and not Heather Martin. So it’s tempting to evade this question. But I have to admit that one of the sweetest thrills of publishing The Reacher Guy last year was when Lee interviewed me rather than the other way round – I’ll be forever grateful to The Big Thrill (the magazine of the International Thriller Writers association) for that audacious idea.
I don’t see myself writing a memoir, just as Lee doesn’t see himself writing an autobiography. Even so, many aspects of Jim Grant’s life story resonate with me, and it’s not least on that basis that I hope the same might be true for others. I too spent my childhood dreaming of escape: not just from the redback spiders, and not because I was unhappy at home (I wasn’t), but because I’d already been given the taste for adventure and travel by my bold, adventurous parents – in their day it wasn’t common to up sticks as they did and emigrate for two years from the sleepy town of Geraldton, several hundred miles north of Perth on the edge of the Indian Ocean, to Aix-en-Provence on the fringes of the Mediterranean. I’ll always admire my early-twenties mother throwing herself fearlessly into the fray of the Provençal food markets with her minimal and Australian-inflected French. And like Lee too, I’ve spent the major part of my life in a prolonged flirtation with another country, or in my case, other countries – France, Spain, England, the United Kingdom in general. So I’ve shared in the outsider experience with all its insights and highs and lows. Of course, he is of the colonisers and I the colonised … I’ve been ambitious too, like him, with enough drive to survive and get on, but in a less directed, more pluralistic way. I lack his singular vision, his ruthless eye on the prize. When I first met the man who would eventually become my guitar teacher in London, he told me I would have to choose between music and ballet. I was thirteen at the time, and I didn’t want to choose. I can hear his words even now, and though in some ways he was clearly right, I still feel in my heart he was wrong.
There’s a reason, too, that The Reacher Guy is so grounded in social detail. It’s because Lee insisted that he was no more than a product of the time and place in which he was born. He was ‘a perfectly normal guy’ whose experiences growing up would be representative of many thousands of others. In fact, he attributes his extraordinary success to the very ordinariness of his origins – he had his writing finger (or two fingers, since he is a two-fingered typist) on the ordinary pulse. Paradoxically, it was his ordinariness that enabled him to escape the ordinary, and achieve the extraordinary. He sums it up nicely in respect to his wealth, acquired only in the latter third of his life (as measured by his current age): ‘I’m a poor man with a lot of money.’
Perhaps there is a fundamental truth in there somewhere: that we all are extraordinary, in our ordinary way. Or should it be the other way round?

But as this is Decades this isn’t just a case of a guest recommending books to read there are rules to follow too. Here’s your weekly Decades recap….

I am assembling the Decades Library, a collection of the very best books as recommended by my guests. In January I started this challenge with no books in my Library but as we reach Halloween there have been over 200 titles recommended. Each week I invite my guest to nominate any five books which they would want to include in the Ultimate Library (so we can ensure the very best books are represented). When selecting their five books my guests can only pick one book per decade from five consecutive decades – a fifty year publication span.

I wanted to make sure the Halloween weekend added some horror titles to my Library and took to Twitter to see if anyone fancied taking on the challenge. Not only did Oli Jacobs step up to help in my hour of need, he has absolutely smashed it out of the park with his selections. I have read four of his nominations and you can bet I will be picking up the fifth book.

 

Oli Jacobs is a bearded fellow who is mostly found patrolling the streets of Southampton in search of good beer, fine company, and fried chicken. Due to his anxiety, please approach with kindness.

DECADES

THE LONG WALK – RICHARD BACHMAN (aka STEPHEN KING) (1979)

In truth, I could have chosen Stephen King books for each of these choices, but for the sake of variety I’ve simply chosen this title, not just because it’s one of my favourites, but because it comes via King’s infamous pseudonym Richard Bachman. The story is simple in its cruelty: 100 teenage boys are forced to take part in a gruelling walking marathon known as the titular Long Walk. There are no breaks, firm rules, and armed guards to make sure things go along smoothly. As we meet our ever-decreasing circle of characters, and the world is built around their experiences, we bear witness to all the simple agonies that this event would bring, from cramp to sleep deprivation.

 

 

SONGS OF A DEAD DREAMER – THOMAS LIGOTTI (1985)

Thomas Ligotti is one of those horror authors where you either know him and absolutely love him, or are blissfully unaware but intrigued by his work when he is mentioned. Songs of a Dead Dreamer is his first collection of short stories – a format Ligotti mostly deals in – and introduces the reader to his nihilistic carnival of dread. Starting with a seemingly basic tale of child abduction in The Frolic, the stories become more weird and dream-like. Tales such as The Greater Festival of Masks also highlight Ligotti’s unnerving use of masquerades and puppets, and you certainly feel the influence of the likes of Lovecraft through every inch of the purple prose.

 

 

 

AMERICAN PSYCHO – BRET EASTON ELLIS (1991)

Probably the most well known and infamous on my list, everyone knows American Psycho thanks to the brilliant performance by Christian Bale in the film adaptation. What they don’t know, unlike those who have read this story, is how brutal Patrick Bateman is in the book. Throughout Bateman’s adventures in sadism, the levels are heightened and violence more absurd as he falls deeper into his own psychosis. But, of course, the question of whether all this horror is real or not lingers over the whole tale, settling on the greasy sheen of 80s capitalism that stains the whole narration through lists of musicians, appliances, and other aesthetic ghouls.

 

 

 

HOUSE OF LEAVES – MARK Z DANIELEWSKI (2000)

I will confess now this is one of my all-time favourite books, not just because of the multi-layered story, but how the whole twisted tale is presented. Mark Z Danielewski doesn’t just tell us the story of a heroin addict going through the files of a film critic, who was studying a documentary about a strange house, and the notes about the strange house from the family who lived there… yep, immediately it’s one of those stories. A labyrinth tale that Danielewski presents in a fashion that is as artistic as it is engrossing. It is an exercise in reader patience, but one that rewards with a nightmarish tale and true sense of discontent at the back of the mind.

 

 

 

THE LAST DAYS OF JACK SPARKS – JASON ARNOPP (2016)

 

This was one of these books I discovered thanks to the wonderful world of author networking that social media has provided us these days. Jason Arnopp is a man well-versed in horror and all things terrifying, given his love for VHS and history of rock journalism. The Last Days of Jack Sparks takes the idea of exorcisms, curses, and hauntings, and twist reality around them along with all the modern technology the titular Jack Sparks introduces to try and save his own skin. The atmosphere is tense from the start, and certain set pieces leave you with a shiver down your shoulder. The music studio bit is a stand out for yours truly…

 

 

I love a good horror story and always feel I should read more than I do. If you are on Twitter then I recommend searching under the #PromoteHorror hashtag where there are always some gems to be find.

Before I say anything else I will cut to the chase…State of Terror is easily one of the most enjoyable reads I have covered on the blog this year. I started reading and I just did not want to stop. It’s the kind of story I love – political dramas, global terror threat, panic on the streets and in the corridors of power in Washington DC the politicians and their staff are trying to keep everyone safe.

On the cover of State of Terror there is an anecdote from Louise Penny which said she asked Hillary about her time as Secretary of State and what had been her worst nightmare. “State of Terror is the answer to that question”.  Before I had even opened the book I was desperate to read it.

Terrorists have detonated bombs in London, Paris and Frankfurt. US Secretary of State, Ellen Adams, is responsible for co-ordinating the American response and keeping in touch with her colleagues around the world. Knowledge needs to be shared and each country is looking out for their own interests while also ensuring no further innocent civilians are harmed but there is also a blame game taking place and America and Adams are front and centre here.

An anonymous and coded message was sent to the American state office. It was picked up by a junior communications handler who was not immediately aware of its significance. She showed it to her boss and was told to bin it as junk. But the message gave her hope as she wondered if it may have been sent by a friend so she took a copy before destroying the original.  That decision turns out to be hugely significant as, after two bombs have detonated, she understands the message and gets it in front of Adams. Her actions saves lives and a survivor from the third bomb may just hold the answer to the biggest question: Who Did This?

State of Terror is a thriller which plays out on a global scale. The pace is frenetic and the risk of failure too great to contemplate. Ellen Adams is Secretary of State and she was a brilliant lead character. Her position is a surprise to many as she opposed the new President during the elections. The administration is taking over from a disastrous Presidency where America was weakened and lost face on the global stage. It’s political intrigue and backstabbing and had me completely hooked.

State of Terror was a reading State of Bliss for me. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny have penned a cracking thriller and I could read books like this all day long. Top stuff – go get it!
